Component-level analysis is where model-year complaints become actionable: the top complaint category for the 1999 LS is vehicle speed control with 3 filings. Concentration in one or two component groups is the classic signature of a systemic defect; a flat distribution usually reflects normal aging, warranty complaints, or isolated build-plant variability.
NHTSA currently has 3 investigation files overlapping the 1999 LS. Owners comparing this cohort against neighboring years should pair the counters above with the complaint-by-year trend on the parent model page — a spike in a single year often tracks to a platform refresh, a new transmission supplier, or an updated ECU calibration. WHILE SLOWLY MAKING A TURN WITH MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE MY CAR SURGED FORWARD. I TRIED TO CONTROL THE CAR BY PUSHING MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE AS HARD AS I COULD WITHOUT SUCCESS. I WAS ABLE TO STOP THE CAR FROM MOVING ONLY BY PUTTING IT ON PARK. THE SURGE WAS VERY SUDDEN AND UNCONTROLLABLE. THIS IS SECOND TIME IT HAPPENED. PLEASE INVESTIGATE. *TR
