New Car Assessment Program

The 2014LAND ROVERLR4 carries 24 consumer safety complaints in NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation database for this specific model-year cohort. Within that volume, owners reported 0 crashes, 0 fires, 0 injuries, and 0 fatalities. No NCAP 5-star crash-test rating is available for this model year in the federal database.

Component-level analysis is where model-year complaints become actionable: the top complaint category for the 2014 LR4 is engine with 6 filings, followed by power train (3) and vehicle speed control (2). Concentration in one or two component groups is the classic signature of a systemic defect; a flat distribution usually reflects normal aging, warranty complaints, or isolated build-plant variability. This model year has 2 active recall campaigns, which means the manufacturer is obligated to remedy the covered defect at no charge for the life of the vehicle — the full NHTSA campaign numbers are listed below.

NHTSA currently has 12 investigation files overlapping the 2014 LR4, and 3 remain open. Owners comparing this cohort against neighboring years should pair the counters above with the complaint-by-year trend on the parent model page — a spike in a single year often tracks to a platform refresh, a new transmission supplier, or an updated ECU calibration. Use the related-complaint feed below to read raw owner narratives before deciding whether any pattern here affects your specific use case.

20241005AIR BAGS

Communication error with system. This controls all functions from braking to cameras to suspension and audio/phone. Research shows that this is a habitual issue on almost all Land Rover models with no fix except to replace entire infotainment center which parts only range from 3-6k. Something needed to be done. This is supposed to be a high end vehicle. There are so many blogs with the same issue with no fix

OUR 2014 LR4 LOST ALL POWER WHILE DRIVING ON A SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA FREEWAY IN THE FAST LANE. SUDDENLY THE CAR STARTED SHUTTING DOWN WITH ZERO WARNING LIGHTS PRIOR TO THE ACCELERATION/POWER NOT WORKING. THE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND WE HAD TO NAVIGATE OUR WAY TO THE SHOULDER THROUGH VERY FAST TRAFFIC WHILE OUR CAR CONTINUED TO SLOW DOWN. WE MADE IT TO THE SHOULDER JUST AS THE CAR COMPLETELY STOPPED RUNNING AND IT WOULDN'T START AGAIN. THIS INCIDENT WAS INCREDIBLY FRIGHTENING AND OUR ENTIRE FAMILY IS VERY LUCKY WE WERE NOT HIT AND/OR INJURED. OUR CAR WAS IN GREAT CONDITION WITH ONLY 56K MILES AND THERE WAS NEVER A WARNING LIGHT THAT CAME ON AT ANY PRIOR TO THE ENGINE SHUT DOWN.

WHILE MERGING ONTO INTERSTATE, VEHICLE SUDDENLY BEGAN SMOKING, SHUDDERING AND LOSING POWER. CONTINUED DOWN INTERSTATE UNTIL I COULD EXIT. AT THE TOP OF THE EXIT RAMP THICK ACRID SMOKE WAS POURING OUT OF THE EXHAUST AND THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO SHAKE EVEN WORSE. I WAS ABLE TO LIMP INTO A GAS STATION AT WHICH POINT THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT FINALLY ILLUMINATED. I TURNED OFF THE VEHICLE AND IT WOULD NEVER RESTART. VEHICLE HAS TO BE TOWED TO DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTICS. MILEAGE AT TIME OF FAILURE IS ONLY 65,000. VEHICLE HAS ALWAYS BEEN MAINTAINED WITH PROPER SPECIFICATION OIL, FILTER AND PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE SERVICES. NO FLUIDS OR VISIBLE SIGNS OF TROUBLE WERE PRESENT UNDER THE HOOD. WHEN ATTEMPTING TO RESTART, ENGINE WOULD TURN OVER BUT NOT START AS IF NO FUEL WAS BEING DELIVERED INTO THE CYLINDERS.

I WAS DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY AND THE CAR JUST STARTED LOSING POWER. I PULLED OVER TO SEE WHAT WAS GOING ON AND THE CAR HAD ANTIFREEZE UNDER THE ENGINE AREA AND WOULD NOT START AGAIN. THE CAR HAS UNDER 90,000 MILES. REPLACED THE ORIGINAL WATER PUMP AT 40,000 MILES. THE NEW WATER PUMP WENT OUT AT 89,000 MILES CAUSING THE ENGINE TO CEASE UP.

AN AIRBAG MALFUNCTION LIGHT ILLUMINATED ON MY DASH TODAY. I SCANNED THE CAR FOR STORED FAULTS AND FOUND SEVERAL, BUT ONE IN PARTICULAR WAS FOR THE PASSENGER FRONTAL AIRBAG/SEAT. THE FAULT CODE SAID THERE WAS IMPROPER SERIAL DATA VALUES RECEIVED. THE CAR HAS JUST CROSSED OVER 50,000 MILES WITHIN THE LAST MONTH, HOWEVER IT IS STILL WITHIN 4 YEARS OF PURCHASE. SINCE THE MILEAGE IS OVER 50,000 MILES, I WAS TOLD BY DEALERSHIP THERE IS NO WARRANTY LEFT FOR THE AIRBAGS. SINCE THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY FEATURE, I BELIEVE THIS SHOULD BE REPAIRED AT MANUFACTURER'S EXPENSE. THE PASSENGER SIDE DOOR LOCK ALSO FAILED AT THE SAME TIME. I HAVE ATTEMPTED TO RESOLVE THE ISSUE BY OPENING AND CLOSING THE DOOR, ADJUSTING THE SEAT POSITION AND FASTENING AND UNFASTENING THE PASSENGER SEAT BELT BUT THE LIGHT STILL REMAINS ON.
