The 1994JEEPJEEP carries 9 consumer safety complaints in NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation database for this specific model-year cohort. Within that volume, owners reported 1 crash, 0 fires, 0 injuries, and 0 fatalities. No NCAP 5-star crash-test rating is available for this model year in the federal database.
Component-level analysis is where model-year complaints become actionable: the top complaint category for the 1994 JEEP is vehicle speed control with 2 filings, followed by service brakes, hydraulic:foundation components (1) and latches/locks/linkages (1). Concentration in one or two component groups is the classic signature of a systemic defect; a flat distribution usually reflects normal aging, warranty complaints, or isolated build-plant variability.
NHTSA currently has 9 investigation files overlapping the 1994 JEEP, and 1 remain open. Owners comparing this cohort against neighboring years should pair the counters above with the complaint-by-year trend on the parent model page — a spike in a single year often tracks to a platform refresh, a new transmission supplier, or an updated ECU calibration. I HAVE A 1994 JEEP CHEROKEE GRAND LAREDO AND IT CAME WITH A 16" "DOUGHNUT" SPARE TIRE. A FEW DAYS AGO I HAD TO CHANGE A FLAT TIRE, AND WHEN I TRIED TO DRIVE ON THE SMALL SPARE TIRE, THE CAR WOULD START TO VIBRATE VIOLENTLY EVERY FEW BLOCKS. I WOULD MAKE A COMPLETE STOP, AND I COULD START DRIVING FOR ABOUT TWO BLOCKS, BEFORE THE CAR STARTED THE SAME PROBLEM. I WAS TOLD THAT THE SPARE WAS TOO SMALL AND THAT THE FOUR WHEEL DRIVE WAS TRYING TO ENGAGE EVEN THOUGH IT WAS ALREADY RUNNING IN FOUR WHEEL DRIVE. HE TOLD ME THAT I HAD A 4 WHEEL HIGH AND LOW TRANSMISSION, AND THIS IS WHY I COULDN'T USE THIS SPARE THAT WAS SUPPLIED WITH THE AUTOMOBILE. HE ALSO TOLD ME THAT THE 1996 JEEP CHEROKEE GRAND LAREDO WAS RECALLED FOR THIS PROBLEM, BUT NOT THE 1994.
