The 1983JEEPCJ7 carries 6 consumer safety complaints in NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation database for this specific model-year cohort. Within that volume, owners reported 0 crashes, 1 fire, 0 injuries, and 0 fatalities. No NCAP 5-star crash-test rating is available for this model year in the federal database.
Component-level analysis is where model-year complaints become actionable: the top complaint category for the 1983 CJ7 is fuel system, gasoline with 1 filings, followed by fuel system, gasoline:storage:tank assembly (1) and fuel system, gasoline:fuel injection system (1). Concentration in one or two component groups is the classic signature of a systemic defect; a flat distribution usually reflects normal aging, warranty complaints, or isolated build-plant variability.
NHTSA currently has 29 investigation files overlapping the 1983 CJ7, and 3 remain open. Owners comparing this cohort against neighboring years should pair the counters above with the complaint-by-year trend on the parent model page — a spike in a single year often tracks to a platform refresh, a new transmission supplier, or an updated ECU calibration. I HAVE A 1983 JEEP CJ7. ON APRIL 23, 2003, WHILE DRIVING ON A MOUNTAIN ROAD, THE RIGHT REAR AXLE BROKE. CAUSING THE RIGHT REAR TIRE TO COME OFF, THE VEHICLE TO DROP TO THE ROAD AND CAUSING EXTENSIVE DAMAGE. WE WERE ALMOST KILLED. THE AXLES IN MY JEEP ARE THE MODEL 20 TYPE, AND ARE KNOWN BY EVERY 4-WHEELER TO EVENTUALLY BREAK. ALL THE JEEPS WITH THE MODEL 20 TYPE REAR AXLES ARE TWO PIECE AND VERY DEFECTIVE. IT COST ME THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS IN REPAIR COSTS TO REPLACE THE AXLE AND FIX THE DAMAGE. WHY WASN'T ANYTHING DONE ABOUT THIS KNOWN DEFECT????? *JB
