Within that volume, owners reported 0 crashes, 0 fires, 0 injuries, and 0 fatalities. No NCAP 5-star crash-test rating is available for this model year in the federal database.
Component-level analysis is where model-year complaints become actionable: the top complaint category for the 1990 AMIGO is visibility:defroster/defogger/hvac system:rear window with 1 filings, followed by structure:body:roof and pillars (1) and wheels:hubcap/cover (1). Concentration in one or two component groups is the classic signature of a systemic defect; a flat distribution usually reflects normal aging, warranty complaints, or isolated build-plant variability.
NHTSA currently has 5 investigation files overlapping the 1990 AMIGO. Owners comparing this cohort against neighboring years should pair the counters above with the complaint-by-year trend on the parent model page — a spike in a single year often tracks to a platform refresh, a new transmission supplier, or an updated ECU calibration. THE RUBBER SLEEVE THAT PROTECTS THE EXPOSED THROTTLE CABLE FROM DIRT HAD STARTED TO MELT (FROM ENGINE HEAT). THE RUBBER HAD MELTED AROUND THE THROTTLE CABLE CAUSING THE CABLE TO BE HELD IN THE OPEN POSITION. WHEN I TOOK MY FOOT OFF THE ACCELERATOR AND DISCOVERED THE THROTTLE WAS STICKING I STARTED BANGING ON THE SIDE OF THE PEDAL WITH MY FOOT THINKING THAT THE PROBLEM WAS WITH THE PEDAL ITSELF CAUSING THE THROTTLE TO BE PRESSED MORE. THIS HAPPEND WHILE TRAVELING SOUTH ON US 301 APPROACHING THE US 70 INTERSECTION IN SELMA, NORTH CAROLINA. AFTER I DID GET THE VEHICLE SHUT OFF, I CHECKED AROUND THE THROTTLE AREA UNDER THE HOOD AND FOUND THE RUBBER MELTING ONTO THE CABLE. I TOOK OFF WHAT WAS LEFT AND CLEANED THE CABLE AND HAVE NOT HAD A PROBLEM SINCE.*AK
