The contact owns a 2001 Infiniti QX4. The contact stated that while driving at unknown speed, there was an abnormal noise coming from the rear of the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the rear struts and rear brackets needed to be replaced due to corrosion. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where they declined to repair the vehicle. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 270,000.

I WAS SMELLING GAS FUMES WHILE MY CAR WAS PARKED IN THE GARAGE. I COULD SEE SOMETHING WET IN THE WHEEL WELL NEAR WHERE THE GAS TANK IS FILLED. HAD IT REPAIRED AT MY INFINITI DEALER, AND THEY REPLACED THE FUEL FILLER TUBE AND HOSES. IT REMINDED ME OF A RECALL NOTICE I RECEIVED IN 2008. IT WAS FOR THE FUEL FILLER TUBE AND HOSES. THEY WERE KNOW TO HAVE CORRODED DUE TO EXPOSURE TO ROAD SALTS. I HAD MY CAR INSPECTED IN 2008 AND THEY SAID EVERYTHING WAS OK AT THE TIME. HOWEVER, BEING ABLE TO SMELL FUMES IN MY GARAGE, I KNOW THAT IT CORRODED THROUGH. THE DEALER AND INFINITI CONSUMER AFFAIRS STATE THAT BECAUSE I DON'T LIVE IN THEIR DERIVED LIST OF STATES THAT "REGULARLY USE SALT IN THE WINTER", THAT I AM NOT ELIGIBLE FOR FREE REPLACEMENT OF THE DEFECTIVE PART. I DO TRAVEL THROUGH A COUPLE OF THE AFFECTED STATES, BUT THE CAR IS NOT REGISTERED IN ONE.
