The 2003INFINITIM carries 5 consumer safety complaints in NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation database for this specific model-year cohort. Within that volume, owners reported 0 crashes, 0 fires, 0 injuries, and 0 fatalities. No NCAP 5-star crash-test rating is available for this model year in the federal database.
Component-level analysis is where model-year complaints become actionable: the top complaint category for the 2003 M is electrical system with 2 filings, followed by fuel system, gasoline (2) and engine and engine cooling (1). Concentration in one or two component groups is the classic signature of a systemic defect; a flat distribution usually reflects normal aging, warranty complaints, or isolated build-plant variability.
NHTSA currently has 7 investigation files overlapping the 2003 M. Owners comparing this cohort against neighboring years should pair the counters above with the complaint-by-year trend on the parent model page — a spike in a single year often tracks to a platform refresh, a new transmission supplier, or an updated ECU calibration. PURCHASED CAR FROM MARIN INFINITI IN AUGUST, 2011. NEXT DAY CAR STALLED DRIVING IN A 50 MPH ZONE AND HAD TO BE COASTED TO SIDE OF THE ROAD ACROSS TRAFFIC. FUEL GAUGE WAS FOUND TO BE INACCURATE, GAS TANK WAS EMPTY WHEN GAUGE STATED 7/8 FULL. MARIN INFINITI WAS UNABLE TO ASSIST. FUEL SENDING UNIT WAS REPLACED FOR $400. GAS GAUGE CONTINUED TO BE INACCURATE, GIVING FALSE READINGS AND EVEN INCREASING AND DECREASING READINGS AS THE CAR WAS DRIVEN. MY MECHANIC CALLED A LOCAL INFINITI DEALER WHO STATED THIS WAS A KNOWN PROBLEM AND COULD ONLY BE CURED WITH REPLACING THE DASH INSTRUMENT CLUSTER FOR $600.CAR IS CURRENTLY IN THE SHOP FOR THIS REPAIR. CONTACT WITH OTHER INFINITI M45 OWNERS PROVES THIS IS A KNOWN DEFECT BY THE MANUFACTURER WHICH, DEPENDING ON WHAT PERSONNEL IS ARE CONTACTED AT NISSAN/INFINITI, HAS SOMETIMES BEEN COVERED UNDER WARRANTY AND SOMETIMES THE MANUFACTURER'S REPS DENY THE ISSUE, FORCING THE PUBLIC TO PAY FOR MANUFACTURER'S DEFECTS. *TR
