Component-level analysis is where model-year complaints become actionable: the top complaint category for the 2018 SANTA FE SPORT is engine with 175 filings, followed by unknown or other (37) and service brakes, hydraulic (34). Concentration in one or two component groups is the classic signature of a systemic defect; a flat distribution usually reflects normal aging, warranty complaints, or isolated build-plant variability. This model year has 4 active recall campaigns, which means the manufacturer is obligated to remedy the covered defect at no charge for the life of the vehicle — the full NHTSA campaign numbers are listed below.
NHTSA currently has 1 investigation file overlapping the 2018 SANTA FE SPORT. Owners comparing this cohort against neighboring years should pair the counters above with the complaint-by-year trend on the parent model page — a spike in a single year often tracks to a platform refresh, a new transmission supplier, or an updated ECU calibration. The contact owns a 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport. The contact stated that while driving at 55 MPH, the engine made a knocking sound, and the vehicle started shaking before starting to smoke. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, who determined that there was a hole in the engine block and that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that since Service Campaign: 953 (ECM & Cluster Update) was not completed in a timely manner, the engine replacement was not covered. The contact had not received the notification for Service Campaign: 953 (ECM & Cluster Update) or owned the vehicle when the Service Campaign had started. The failure mileage was approximately 122,000.

engine cut out on highway, check engine light flashing. Car would not exceed 50 mph on highway and would hesitate/jump trying to go up any hill/incline. Took to mechanic and vehicle had P1326 knock sensor code. There appears to be a service campaign (Campaign 966/T3G) for 2013-2018 Sanat Fe Sport vehicles, but when i enter my VIN campaign does not appear. This is a safety risk/hazard and should be covered by the campaign/addressed by dealer. Car has always been well maintained and adhere to service schedule.
While parked the panoramic sunroof spontaneously shattered.
My air bar light was flashing so I took it into the dealer as it is still under warranty. They said it is a sensor in the seat that deploys the air bag. It has been since November with no ETA on the part. When I asked about getting my car back after several times they tried to get me to sign a wavier saying if I was in an accident they wouldn't be liable. I refused and my car is still at this dealership.

My vehicle is using excessive oil. I first noticed this around 80 000 miles. Initially it started off with not being able to get the 5000 miles before next oil change and dropped to around 4000 miles. It then dropped to 3000 and now less than a 1000 miles before I am needing at least 2 quarts of oil. I have had the vehicle examined by midas and they confirmed there are no leaks, cracks or reason for the excessive oil consumption. They suggested that I contact the dealer as this is a known issue and to get help with replacing the engine. I contacted the dealership and was told I would get a call back and never did. I also contacted hyundai on their website and put in a complaint and requested the engine be replaced, with no response from that as well.
Car stuttered and would not rev past 2k rpm. Blinking check engine light appeared Code was for known connecting rod failure for all theta engines for our 2018 sante fe. Hyundai is trying to get out of covering the cost of repair or replacement even though this is a very well known issue and is covered under warranty.

Constantly losing oil and there is NO oil leak. Had numerous Oil Consumption Test done. Paid for other unnecessary testing as well. Thousand of complaints on line of other Santa Fe Sports also having the same issue. Hyundai denied a new engine even though dealership recommended it. Also Hyundai Consumer also denied, since corporate told dealership no. Losing 4 quarts of oil, going less than 1000 miles. Let it sit for over a month, then took it back. Now they said I was 2 quarts over. It has the dealership tamper seals on it. Only dealership has been adding oil. Customer Service representative, accused me of adding oil. I asked how do you think I did that? Your Seals are on my car that your dealership out on there. Said it needed an oil change since it was over. Told him that's fine, but I was not paying for it, since they were the only one who out the oil in. So now I am having to do yet another oil consumption test. This was on 2.3.26
engine consumes excessive amounts of oil. we have to check oil every day and add oil even after 30 mile trips. low oil can result in a seized engine which could result in a crash if power is lost in high traffic areas or highway speeds. hyundai knows there is an issue and engines that seize are replaced with the same defective design. this is dangerous and could result in a crash or being stranded in an unsafe area
My starter failed while out shopping. No issues starting the car departing from my home, but would not start in the store parking lot. My mechanic did not provide the broken part for inspection however everyone commented that is was very unusual for it to fail as I only have roughly 25,000 miles on it. My mechanic also mentioned that this was 2nd 2018 hyundai sante fe in the past week he had to replace the starter on that vehicle had 60,000 miles. There were no warning lights prior to the event, I suspected it was the starter after having a new battery installed and no success starting because of the lights that remained on on the instrument panel.
My vehicle has approximately 152,000 miles, and I am currently experiencing a major engine failure. Oil consumption and knocking on engine Hyundai has had lawsuits in the past with unsafe unreliable engines.

The vehicle developed loud engine knocking and abnormal noise consistent with known Hyundai engine defects. The vehicle is unsafe to operate and has been retained at an authorized Hyundai dealership since October 25, 2025. Hyundai vehicles with similar engine failures have been documented to catch fire, including while parked. Despite the known defect pattern, the manufacturer is refusing warranty coverage, alleging lack of complete oil change records, without providing proof that maintenance caused the failure. This represents a serious safety risk to occupants and the public. My family includes a child with a motor disability, which significantly increases the danger in the event of fire or engine failure.
I have been experiencing issues with oil consumption, having to get oil changes every 2 months and sometimes monthly with no reported leaks from 2 different mechanics. I have been very high maintenance over my oil. While I was driving on the highway, my vehicle began to shake and a knocking sound was heard. I felt the vehicle begin to jerk but no warning lights were on. I was no longer able to drive and had to pull over and wait for a tow to my mechanic's garage. The mechanic let me know there was an issue with the engine, specifically the 3rd cylinder and the piston. It does not put out as much pressure as it is supposed to. I brought the vehicle to the dealership after and they confirmed this was an issue and quoted me $8700 in repairs. There were no warning lights and no engine lights prior to this happening. I was informed by my mechanic that this is a known issue with Hyundai in their 2018 models having failing engines. I purchased the vehicle certified pre-owned with a guarantee
