The 2004HUMMERH2 carries 74 consumer safety complaints in NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation database for this specific model-year cohort. Within that volume, owners reported 8 crashes, 2 fires, 6 injuries, and 0 fatalities. No NCAP 5-star crash-test rating is available for this model year in the federal database.

Component-level analysis is where model-year complaints become actionable: the top complaint category for the 2004 H2 is electrical system with 10 filings, followed by service brakes (8) and service brakes, hydraulic (6). Concentration in one or two component groups is the classic signature of a systemic defect; a flat distribution usually reflects normal aging, warranty complaints, or isolated build-plant variability. This model year has 4 active recall campaigns, which means the manufacturer is obligated to remedy the covered defect at no charge for the life of the vehicle — the full NHTSA campaign numbers are listed below.

NHTSA currently has 2 investigation files overlapping the 2004 H2. Owners comparing this cohort against neighboring years should pair the counters above with the complaint-by-year trend on the parent model page — a spike in a single year often tracks to a platform refresh, a new transmission supplier, or an updated ECU calibration. Use the related-complaint feed below to read raw owner narratives before deciding whether any pattern here affects your specific use case.

Yesterday I turned off the alarm and unlocked the doors via the keypad. I opened the driver door and my wife opened the passenger rear door and the Hummer H2 started. No key in the ignition and the fob does not have a start button. I then got in the car and inserted the key and turned the key to ON then to off and the vehicle would not shut off. Only after cycling through the gears was I able to shut off the vehicle. I have now disconnected the battery to prevent another unwanted start.

MY 2004 H2 HAS A SERIOUS RUSTING ISSUE WITH THE BRAKE LINES. ON 2 SEPARATE OCCASIONS I HAVE BEEN DRIVING ALONG AT APPROXIMATELY 30 MPG AND HIT THE BRAKES ONLY TO HAVE THEM GO ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR. LUCKILY I DID NOT AN ACCIDENT. IN BOTH OCCASIONS THE LINE BURST DUE TO RUST. MY VEH. HAS 103,000.00 LIGHTLY DRIVEN. GM NEEDS TO COME OUT AND ADMIT THEY HAVE A PROBLEM WITH RUSTING BRAKE LIENS BEFORE SOMEONE GETS KILLED

I WAS DRIVING HOME AT NIGHT AND ABOUT A MILE BEFORE I GOT HOME MY TRANSMISSION DIDN'T SEEM TO SHIFT AS SMOOTH AS IT USUALLY DOES AND WHEN I PARKED IN MY GARAGE I GOT OUT AND TRANSMISSION FLUID WAS DRIPPING OUT FROM UNDER MY H2 VERY QUICKLY AND BY THE NEXT HOUR IT HAD EVERY BIT RUN OUT AND HUGE PUDDLE OF TRANSMISSION FLUID WAS ALL OVER MY GARAGE FLOOR. I TOOK THE SKID PLATE OFF MY H2 AND THE TRANSMISSION LINE HAD A HOLE RUSTED THROUGH IT. HAD I BEEN ANOTHER FEW MILES AWAY FROM GETTING HOME THIS COULD HAVE DESTROYED MY TRANSMISSION AND POSSIBLY CAUSED ME TO WRECK.
