New Car Assessment Program

The 2022HONDAPASSPORT carries 78 consumer safety complaints in NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation database for this specific model-year cohort. Within that volume, owners reported 1 crash, 0 fires, 2 injuries, and 0 fatalities. For crash performance, NHTSA's New Car Assessment Program gave this cohort an overall 5/5 rating, with 4/5 front crash, 5/5 side crash, and 4/5 rollover scores derived from standardized barrier and dynamic tests.

Component-level analysis is where model-year complaints become actionable: the top complaint category for the 2022 PASSPORT is power train with 9 filings, followed by forward collision avoidance: automatic emergency braking (8) and unknown or other (8). Concentration in one or two component groups is the classic signature of a systemic defect; a flat distribution usually reflects normal aging, warranty complaints, or isolated build-plant variability. This model year has 3 active recall campaigns, which means the manufacturer is obligated to remedy the covered defect at no charge for the life of the vehicle — the full NHTSA campaign numbers are listed below.

NHTSA currently has 4 investigation files overlapping the 2022 PASSPORT, and 1 remain open. Owners comparing this cohort against neighboring years should pair the counters above with the complaint-by-year trend on the parent model page — a spike in a single year often tracks to a platform refresh, a new transmission supplier, or an updated ECU calibration. Use the related-complaint feed below to read raw owner narratives before deciding whether any pattern here affects your specific use case.

The starter failed to start the car due to what is described as a "frozen starter". A TSB exists for Honda where the problem is acknowledged, TSB 23-023. This left me stranded in the cold on 1/26 and 1/27. Many other drivers of similar vehicles have reported this problem in the past week. The problem is uniquely and disconcertingly dangerous as the problem impacts drivers who are in freezing conditions which can be inherently life-threatening if a known issue exists with a "frozen starter", this problem cannot be rectified by vehicle maintenance, for example, having a new battery or jump starter does not fix the problem. This problem strikes drivers in freezing and life-threatening conditions and is inherently unsafe and hazardous. The vehicle has not been inspected as Honda would not honor rectifying this issue for an "out of warranty" vehicle despite widespread concern. There were no warnings or messages prior to the problem. They first appeared in freezing cold after a precipitation

Our vehicle experienced total transmission failure with no warning while I was driving on a narrow country road. The car shifted into neutral, and I was unable to go anywhere, so I sat in the middle of the road with hazard lights on in a state of panic. We had the car towed to a nearby Honda dealership and were informed of the transmission failure, which was identified through a diagnostic test. Codes that failed were listed as: P0730; P0700; P07A6; P07A8; P07A4. I have owned the car for one year and three months (purchased October 2024 for $34,000). I am being told it is just past the power train warranty, and Honda is not offering any assistance in covering the repair cost - $10,000.

“Road departure mitigation system problem” is the error that comes up on the dash. The error shuts down cruise control and slows the car down unexpectedly. I’ve taken the vehicle to the Honda dealer in Tampa Florida where I purchased it and they will not fix the vehicle. The error is a safety issue slowing the vehicle down in traffic and a driver distraction triggered by the Collision Mitigation System and Roadway Departure System.

First new car in my life and I’m 70. When we bought the car, within a week the entire dash board lit up with warnings. Call the dealer, they towed it to their shop and “calibrated” the Collision Mitigation front facing camera. This service was Completed but within the next 2 years, the situation repeated itself over and over But would always go away. The last time the system failed (with all of the bells and whistles) I went back to Honda and they informed me a replacement was required. $1500 later the front facing Multipurpose Camera was replaced. The car’s 3 year warranty expired 2 months before the needed replacement. The dealer told me that these cameras have been a significant problem, and are replaced often. The replacement camera has a different part number from what was installed on the car when built. This indicates that Honda knows of this problem, and has upgraded the camera but left it to the owners to replace if it is out of warranty (even 2 months)

Auto has a known defect with headlight condensation ,Honda put out a bulletin sb 23-024 Stating they are aware of this issue.Vehicle had this problem at 38000 miles just outside Their standard 3 year 36000 mile warranty. To repair this Honda dealer stated a price of $1400.00 ,which is a lot of money ,my concern is that failure to fix will lead to other headlight Issues such as burned out bulbs and harness corrosion. Not to mention adding to dim light poor visibility

At speeds above 55 mph, car will make a noise like paper being torn, followed by a loss of throttle response. This lasts for 3 to 5 seconds, then everything returns to normal. This has happened with the cruise control set, or while under foot control. No warning of any kind show up on the dashboard. We have taken our vehicle to the dealership on May 15 2025. They could find nothing after polling the computer or on multiple road trips. This loss of throttle has occurred six times in the last five months. We will keep a written record of these events as they happen, and pray that nobody gets hurt or dies from this.
