Within that volume, owners reported 7 crashes, 9 fires, 18 injuries, and 0 fatalities. No NCAP 5-star crash-test rating is available for this model year in the federal database.
Component-level analysis is where model-year complaints become actionable: the top complaint category for the 2009 ODYSSEY is structure:body with 42 filings, followed by engine (34) and electrical system (20). Concentration in one or two component groups is the classic signature of a systemic defect; a flat distribution usually reflects normal aging, warranty complaints, or isolated build-plant variability. This model year has 4 active recall campaigns, which means the manufacturer is obligated to remedy the covered defect at no charge for the life of the vehicle, the full NHTSA campaign numbers are listed below.
NHTSA currently has 8 investigation files overlapping the 2009 ODYSSEY, and 1 remain open. Owners comparing this cohort against neighboring years should pair the counters above with the complaint-by-year trend on the parent model page, a spike in a single year often tracks to a platform refresh, a new transmission supplier, or an updated ECU calibration. Use the related-complaint feed below to read raw owner narratives before deciding whether any pattern here affects your specific use case.

American Honda Motor Co., Inc. (Honda) is recalling certain 2005-2010 Honda Odyssey vehicles manufactured June 23, 2004, through September 4, 2010. In the affected vehicles, the fuel pump strainer cover may deteriorate allowing fuel to leak out.
Honda installed a VCM (Variable Cylinder Management) in this engine which shuts down the back three cylinders to save fuel when the car warms up. Youâll know when it kicks in when you see ECO on your dash. When the cylinders shut down it starts an abnormal wear and tear on those cylinders. High oil consumption, fouled plugs, the need to repair the back three cylinders and misfiring of the engine are some of the problems. Honda did repair some vehicles if they experienced rough running and misfiring on those cylinders because they knew the issue was the VCM. However, when my 2009 Honda Odyssey started having those problems in 2024 they wouldnât fix the problem and stated it was too late to fix the engine. The timeline, according to Honda, had passed to repair the damaged engine. I never received a recall for this known safety issue. The engine would cut out and the engine light would come on and it sputtered down the road on three of the six cylinders. Honda knew this was a problem

Windshield wipers and also the key fob and the sliding doors as well as the blinkers do not work all at the same time first time itâs ever happened. It is a safety issue as this just happens out of nowhere without any warning while Iâm driving. All of a sudden it just happened the first time and I didnât even realize it until I didnât hear the clicking and someone said hey your blinkers are not working. Twice during the last year, the bolt securing the drive belt tensioner has broken while driving the vehicle. This results in loss of steering, electrical, and cooling of the engine. The first time the incident occurred on a stretch of rural highway where the lone occupant had to wait for help to arrive. The first date was on May 12, 2022. The second incident took place in an urban area on January 25, 2023. But, with only 8 months in between the incidents, it is apparent there is a problem in this. The original repair in May was accomplished by a Honda dealer.

Transmission gears, while driving gears don't engage properly. It struggles to change gears specifically between 3rd to 4th gear. Also when parked and change to Drive makes a stump noise.
Van was driven at approximately 7:50pm a short distance. After parking vehicle, 10 minutes later the alarm went off. Upon disarming the alarm, the entire engine was engulfed in flames. Van is maintained regularly, no check engine light indicating any issues with vehicle. Entire engine caught fire. Fire dept extinguished fire. No comprehensive insurance so no inspection to cause of actual fire. Neighbors Ring camera shows alarm going off and as soon as it was disarmed, engine completely engulfed in flames. This video was sent to fire dept for their report. Vehicle still sitting where it caught fire, in front of my residence. I have yet to get it towed or inspected.
Vibration between 30-40 mph is usually caused by axles of this car, 06-09 models, that might have safe issue in long run.
On 6/18 I installed a set of aftermarket front left and right lower control arms made by Mevotech part #'s CMS601007 (left) and CMS601008(right), Mevotech has installed a grease zerk on the ball joints which are not on the OEM control arms, in theory this might be good but the grease zerk impacts, INTERFERENCE, with the inside of the wheel. The ball joint grease zerk has hard contact with the inside of the front wheel. - I have pictures of the zerk hitting the wheel and the damage to the wheel. -Safety - damage to the wheel while driving resulting in a loss of vehicle control and possible damage to the ball joint again loss of control. - pictures have been sent to Mevotech and the parts supplier - Parts Geek.
my drivers side door started making a grinding noise and when we attempted to close the door it it fell off the track, it almost closed my child in the door, now there is significant body damage and my door is not working
When Honda IT Department wrote and installed the in-dash Navigation Computer System they neglected to correct a permanently and known Date and Time Glitch. January 2022 the date and time went back to 2002. Owners can not correct this glitch. Each time as you start the engine and begin to drive the Navigation System give off a not expecting very loud high pitch sound , which is a safety hazard. It has startled me and my passenger where I have slammed on brakes or jerked my steering
Starting on January 1, 2022, my vehicle's clock (2009 Honda Odyssey Touring w/Navigation) are showing incorrect times on both the dash vehicle clock as well as the one on the Navigation screen, and cannot be adjusted. Time on Navigation screen always starts at around 7.17pm, then works as usual, but resets after restarting car. Date always shows Jan 1, 2002. Dash clocks seems to work (advances normally), but just can't be adjusted, as it usually syncs with Navigation Clock. There is no adjustement possible to the clock; only minor +/- adjustments from the GPS-feed time, and that adjustment is not functioning now. When I try to adjust the time, it acts erratic & jumps back to original setting. Other owners are reporting similar issues. (https://www.crvownersclub.com/threads/clock-fault-year-2022-note-this-is-not-a-gps-related-issue-merged-master-thread.224326/) I am the original & current owner of this vehicle, which has never been in a major accident. A miss fire in the engine which is causing slow speed when going up a hill or using the Air Conditioner. If it was to fail while driving it would be not good, could cause an accident. Also need to bring attention that Honda lack of concern for the safety of the driver and other people on the road.
I PURCHASED A 2009 HONDA ODYSSEY FROM WEST AUTO SALES LOCATED AT 6145 E. LANCASTER RD. FORT WORTH, TX 76112 ON 03/27/2021. I HAVE HAD NOTHING BUT PROBLEMS WITH IT. THE FIRST TWO DAYS OF DRIVING IT THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON DUE TO THE CATALYTIC CONVERTOR NEEDING TO BE REPLACED. THE DEALERSHIP MANAGED TO GET THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT OFF WITHOUT REPLACING IT. A FEW DAYS AFTER GETTING THE CAR BACK THE SERPENTINE BELT BROKE OFF. I NOTIFIED THE DEALER AND BROUGHT IT BACK TO THEM. THEY INFORMED ME THAT THERE WAS A BOLT BROKEN INSIDE THE TENSIONER AND IT WOULD TAKE FOUR DAYS IN ORDER TO GET THE TOOLS AND SUPPLIES NEEDED IN ORDER TO FIX IT. THE NEXT DAY I RECEIVED A PHONE CALL FROM THE DEALER AND TOLD THAT THEY GOT THE BOLT OUT WITH NO PROBLEM AND PUT A NEW TENSIONER IN AND REPLACED THE BELT. NOT EVEN A WEEK AFTER THAT THE BELT CAME OFF AGAIN AND I HAD TO HAVE IT TOWED TO FIRESTONE COMPLETE AUTO CARE AND THEY TOLD ME THAT THE SAME BROKEN BOLT WAS STILL THERE HOLDING TOGETHER THE TENSIONER.
