New Car Assessment Program

The 2004HONDAODYSSEY carries 715 consumer safety complaints in NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation database for this specific model-year cohort. Within that volume, owners reported 54 crashes, 11 fires, 54 injuries, and 1 fatality. No NCAP 5-star crash-test rating is available for this model year in the federal database.

Component-level analysis is where model-year complaints become actionable: the top complaint category for the 2004 ODYSSEY is power train with 147 filings, followed by air bags (106) and power train:automatic transmission (75). Concentration in one or two component groups is the classic signature of a systemic defect; a flat distribution usually reflects normal aging, warranty complaints, or isolated build-plant variability. This model year has 13 active recall campaigns, which means the manufacturer is obligated to remedy the covered defect at no charge for the life of the vehicle — the full NHTSA campaign numbers are listed below.

NHTSA currently has 8 investigation files overlapping the 2004 ODYSSEY, and 1 remain open. Owners comparing this cohort against neighboring years should pair the counters above with the complaint-by-year trend on the parent model page — a spike in a single year often tracks to a platform refresh, a new transmission supplier, or an updated ECU calibration. Use the related-complaint feed below to read raw owner narratives before deciding whether any pattern here affects your specific use case.

I’ve seen several recalls on the transmission for Honda odysseys that are 2004 just like mine . My transmission has been horrible for the entire time Ive had it. When accelerating, it jumps super hard from 1st into 2nd gear. switching from first gear to 2nd. Sometimes I have to manually switch it into D3 just to get the vehicle moving again. I’ve found this to be pretty scary at times . I’ve searched and searched to see if I had a recall for the transmission and I haven’t but It did show the SRS system recall which I did have serviced. I’m making this complaint because I feel like my vehicle has been affected and overlooked

As the result of a recall, my driver airbag inflator was replaced. Soon afterwards, my horn started honking when hitting, bumps or moving the steering wheel. I returned the vehicle to the dealership, and they said they adjusted something that seem to help for a short period of time. However, the problem returned upon taking the car to another dealership. I found that the automotive repairman stated that the wrong part for the inflator had been installed. I returned it to the original dealership and they refused to address the problem. The dealer is persons Honda at 15525 Frederick Rd., Rockville, MD 20855.
