Component-level analysis is where model-year complaints become actionable: the top complaint category for the 2005 CIVIC GX is air bags with 1 filings, followed by structure:body (1). Concentration in one or two component groups is the classic signature of a systemic defect; a flat distribution usually reflects normal aging, warranty complaints, or isolated build-plant variability. This model year has 3 active recall campaigns, which means the manufacturer is obligated to remedy the covered defect at no charge for the life of the vehicle — the full NHTSA campaign numbers are listed below.
NHTSA currently has 77 investigation files overlapping the 2005 CIVIC GX, and 9 remain open. Owners comparing this cohort against neighboring years should pair the counters above with the complaint-by-year trend on the parent model page — a spike in a single year often tracks to a platform refresh, a new transmission supplier, or an updated ECU calibration. MY TRUNK HAS WATER COMING INTO IT,I CAN'T TELL IF IT IS THE RUBBER SEAL?
TAKATA RECALL. WHEN I WIPED THE DASHBOARD OF MY CIVIC RECENTLY, THE PASSENGER AIRBAG COVER FELT TACKY/STICKY. THE REST OF THE DASH WAS PERFECTLY SMOOTH AND NON-STICKY. WHEN I TRIED TO CLEAN THE AIRBAG COVER, THE PAINT STARTED COMING OFF AND THERE WAS A LAYER OF VERY THICK, BLACK, TAR-LIKE GRIME UNDERNEATH. THE HONDA DEALER REPLACED THE TAKATA AIRBAG 2.5 YEARS AGO, AND SINCE THEN NOTHING HAD TOUCHED THE COVER (NO SPILLS, NO CLEANING PRODUCTS OR OTHER CHEMICALS). THE CAR IS GARAGED MOST OF THE TIME AND SPENDS LESS TIME IN THE SUN THAN MOST CARS. I SHOWED THE TAR/GRIME TO THE HONDA DEALER, AND THEY SAID THEY HAD NO IDEA WHY THE COVER WAS LIKE THAT AND COULDN'T DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT. I AM NOW VERY CONCERNED ABOUT THE SAFETY OF THE AIRBAG (DID THE DEALER REPLACE MINE WITH A REFURBISHED ONE?). I'D BE HAPPY TO PROVIDE MORE PHOTOS OR BRING THE CAR TO A REASONABLY CLOSE NHTSA LOCATION TO BE EXAMINED, IF THAT WOULD HELP. THANKS.
