New Car Assessment Program

The 2003HONDACIVIC carries 619 consumer safety complaints in NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation database for this specific model-year cohort. Within that volume, owners reported 127 crashes, 6 fires, 109 injuries, and 13 fatalities. No NCAP 5-star crash-test rating is available for this model year in the federal database.

Component-level analysis is where model-year complaints become actionable: the top complaint category for the 2003 CIVIC is air bags with 120 filings, followed by power train:automatic transmission (72) and electrical system (37). Concentration in one or two component groups is the classic signature of a systemic defect; a flat distribution usually reflects normal aging, warranty complaints, or isolated build-plant variability. This model year has 24 active recall campaigns, which means the manufacturer is obligated to remedy the covered defect at no charge for the life of the vehicle — the full NHTSA campaign numbers are listed below.

NHTSA currently has 3 investigation files overlapping the 2003 CIVIC. Owners comparing this cohort against neighboring years should pair the counters above with the complaint-by-year trend on the parent model page — a spike in a single year often tracks to a platform refresh, a new transmission supplier, or an updated ECU calibration. Use the related-complaint feed below to read raw owner narratives before deciding whether any pattern here affects your specific use case.

My Air Bag light indicator light has come on and does not go off. My car is a 2003 Honda Civic LX module. I am the third owner of this vehicle. I bought it at Kelly Nissan on 248 E in Easton, Pa with 117,880 miles. It has 123,000 miles on it now. There were no other indicator lights on prior to this safety issue, air bag light indicator light coming on and it is still on at the present time, I need it fixed, because it has to be inspected by July 31, 2022, and I do not think it will pass Pa inspection. My Honda is available upon request. Please contact me by my email or by my mailing address I provided, my phone at the present time is out of service till I purchase a new one, please! A.S.P.

The contact owns a 2003 Honda Civic. The contact stated that she had previously received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 19V499000 (Air Bags) and the vehicle was taken to the dealer for the front driver's air bag replacement; however, upon picking up the vehicle, she noticed that the air bag warning light was illuminated. The dealer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the warning light was illuminated prior to the recall repair. The vehicle then was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that a disconnected electrical wire for the air bag might have caused the impact sensor to fail. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 140,000. The VIN was not available.
