Component-level analysis is where model-year complaints become actionable: the top complaint category for the 1998 C SERIES is unknown or other with 1 filings, followed by steering (1). Concentration in one or two component groups is the classic signature of a systemic defect; a flat distribution usually reflects normal aging, warranty complaints, or isolated build-plant variability.
NHTSA currently has 2 investigation files overlapping the 1998 C SERIES. Owners comparing this cohort against neighboring years should pair the counters above with the complaint-by-year trend on the parent model page — a spike in a single year often tracks to a platform refresh, a new transmission supplier, or an updated ECU calibration. THIS VEHICLES WIPER BLADE SYSTEM FAILS SPORADICALLY. IT WAS RETURNED TO THE RETAILER FOR THIS PROBLEM AND A PROBLEM WHEN THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT START. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED BUT WHEN IT ARRIVED AT THE DEALERSHIP THE VEHICLE WOULD THEN START AND THE WIPERS WORKED ALSO. HOWEVER, THE WIPERS STILL FAIL EITHER WHEN THEY WERE ALREADY WORKING AND WHEN TURNED ON INITIALLY. TO ME THIS APPEARS TO BE A WIRING ISSUE. IT APPEARS TO BE THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM SEEN IN THE '97 YUKON WHICH HAD A RECALL FOR THIS DEFECT. IT APPEARS THAT THE PROBLEM EXTENDS TO THE '98 MODEL TOO.
FIRST OFF THE TRUCK WAS MANUFACTURED IN CANADA. NOT SURE IF THAT'S RELEVANT OR NOT? THE STEERING ON THIS TRUCK HAS GOTTEN PRETTY SCARY AT TIMES. THE WHEEL WILL GET HARD TO TURN THEN IT WILL BE NORMAL, THEN IT GET SUPER EASY SO THAT YOU OVERSTEER. IT HAPPENS IN BOTH DIRECTIONS. I'VE TRIED BRINGING IT TO A DEALER TWICE BUT THE PROBLEMS IS INTERMITANT WHICH MAKES IT EVEN MORE DANGEROUS AND HARDER TO DIAGNOSE. I NOTICED SOMEONE ELSE IS HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM. I'M STILL LOOKING FOR A RESOLUTION TO THIS PROBLEM MY FEELING IS I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE.
