Component-level analysis is where model-year complaints become actionable: the top complaint category for the 2002 PRIZM is visibility:rearview mirrors/devices:interior with 1 filings, followed by fuel system, gasoline:fuel injection system (1) and latches/locks/linkages:doors:latch (1). Concentration in one or two component groups is the classic signature of a systemic defect; a flat distribution usually reflects normal aging, warranty complaints, or isolated build-plant variability.

No open NHTSA investigation overlaps the 2002 PRIZM in the current dataset. Owners comparing this cohort against neighboring years should pair the counters above with the complaint-by-year trend on the parent model page — a spike in a single year often tracks to a platform refresh, a new transmission supplier, or an updated ECU calibration. IN ADDITION TO THE VEHICLE NOT STARTING PROPERLY (EXCESSIVE CRANK TIME) THE VEHICLE HAS SUDDEN REDUCTIONS IN SPEED (NOT NORMAL SLOW DOWN) WHEN RELEASING GAS PEDAL. IT IS AS IF THE FUEL IS SUDDENLY CUT OFF SIGNIFICANTLY,CAUSING CAR TO SLOW ERRATICALLY. DEALERSHIP CONFIRMED THE PROBLEM AND REPLACED FUEL PUMP AND REGULATOR. CAR STILL HAS INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS RELATING TO JERKING WHEN RELEASING PEDAL. I RETURNED TO THE DEALERSHIP A SECOND TIME WITH ONLY 1,230 MILES ON THE CAR AND THEY INDICATED THEY COULD NOT DUPLICATE PROBLEM. HOWEVER, THE PROBLEM OCCURRED AGAIN THIS MORNING. I NOW HAVE 4,035 MILES ON THE CAR. THE PROBLEM IS MOST NOTICEABLE BETWEEN 30 AND 40 MPH.*AK
