Within that volume, owners reported 0 crashes, 0 fires, 0 injuries, and 0 fatalities. No NCAP 5-star crash-test rating is available for this model year in the federal database.
Component-level analysis is where model-year complaints become actionable: the top complaint category for the 2002 SUPER DUTY is service brakes, hydraulic with 1 filings, followed by steering:hydraulic power assist:pump (1) and electrical system:alternator/generator/regulator (1). Concentration in one or two component groups is the classic signature of a systemic defect; a flat distribution usually reflects normal aging, warranty complaints, or isolated build-plant variability.
NHTSA currently has 3 investigation files overlapping the 2002 SUPER DUTY, and 1 remain open. Owners comparing this cohort against neighboring years should pair the counters above with the complaint-by-year trend on the parent model page — a spike in a single year often tracks to a platform refresh, a new transmission supplier, or an updated ECU calibration. MARCH 2005 AN ALTERNATOR WAS REPLACED UNDER WARRANTY WITH A REMANUFACTURED ONE WHICH FAILED IN AUGUST 2005 LEAVING ME STRANDED 250 MILES FROM HOME. ON DECEMBER 09,2005 A POWER STEERING PUMP WAS REPLACED UNDER THE EXT. WARR. PROGRAM WITH YET AGAIN A REMAN. PUMP. ON DECEMBER 22 IT FAILED LEAVING ME WITH NO BRAKES AND NO STEERING. IT IS A DIESEL IN WHICH THE BRAKE SYSTEM USES THE POWER STEERING PUMP FOR BOOST POWER. I WAS NEARLY INJURED DUE TO THIS SINCE I WAS MAKING A U-TURN AND ENDED UP GOING HEAD-ON INTO THE TRAFFIC THAT WAS ORIGINALLY BEHIND ME. CAN SOMETHING BE DONE ABOUT THE USE OF REMANUFACTURED PARTS ON WARR. VEHICLES? I HAVE 44,000 MILES ON A TRUCK THAT IS BUILT TO LAST 300,000 PLUS MILES. I CAN'T UNDERSTAND WHY JAPANESE AND GERMAN VEHICLES THE I OWNED NEVER HAD ANY PROBLEMS. THANK YOU,JOE MARMORATO. *NM
