The 1980FORDPINTO carries 2 consumer safety complaints in NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation database for this specific model-year cohort. Within that volume, owners reported 0 crashes, 0 fires, 0 injuries, and 0 fatalities. No NCAP 5-star crash-test rating is available for this model year in the federal database.
Component-level analysis is where model-year complaints become actionable: the top complaint category for the 1980 PINTO is vehicle speed control with 1 filings, followed by tires:tread/belt (1). Concentration in one or two component groups is the classic signature of a systemic defect; a flat distribution usually reflects normal aging, warranty complaints, or isolated build-plant variability.
NHTSA currently has 177 investigation files overlapping the 1980 PINTO, and 8 remain open. Owners comparing this cohort against neighboring years should pair the counters above with the complaint-by-year trend on the parent model page — a spike in a single year often tracks to a platform refresh, a new transmission supplier, or an updated ECU calibration. WE PURCHASED A 1980 FORD PINTO BRAND NEW AND WITHIN TWO YEARS ALL FOUR FIRESTONE TIRES HAD FAILED ALL DUE TO STEEL BELT SEPARATION, THERE WAS NO INJURY OR OTHER DAMAGE BUT ONE REAR TIRE ACTUALLY SUFFERED A BLOW OUT ON THE HIGHWAY. THIS CAR WAS TATALED IN A NON-TIRE RELATED ACCIDENT IN 1992 AND I NO LONGER RETAIN ANY RECORDS ON IT. I REPORT THIS TO YOU IN LIGHT OF THE RECENT PROBLEMS WITH FIRESTONE TIRES. THEY MAKE TRASH TIRES AND I DO NOT BELIEVE FORD TO BE RESPONSIBLE (EVEN THOUGH I DO NOT BUY FORD PRODUCTS ANY LONGER) FIRESTONE HAS A BAD HISTORY OF POOR TIRE SAFETY AND I FEEL YOU SHOULD INVESTIGATE ALL FIRESTONE TIRES! YOU MAY FIND A REAL SURPRISE! *AK (TIRESIZE: 13INCH)( DOT NUMBER: TIRE SIZE: 13INCH )
THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED AND IT STARTED BY ITSELF TO ROLL BACKWARDS AND THEN EXPLODED.PLEASE DESCRIBE. *AK
