Component-level analysis is where model-year complaints become actionable: the top complaint category for the 1979 LTD is tires with 2 filings, followed by electrical system:ignition:switch (1). Concentration in one or two component groups is the classic signature of a systemic defect; a flat distribution usually reflects normal aging, warranty complaints, or isolated build-plant variability.
NHTSA currently has 177 investigation files overlapping the 1979 LTD, and 8 remain open. Owners comparing this cohort against neighboring years should pair the counters above with the complaint-by-year trend on the parent model page — a spike in a single year often tracks to a platform refresh, a new transmission supplier, or an updated ECU calibration. WHEN I WAS DRIVING IN LAS VEGAS AT LOW SPEED I HEARD A NOISE WHICH WAS AMPLIFIED WHEN CAR WAS DRIVING FASTER. WHEN I STOPED AND I CHECK A WHOLE SKIN OF THE TIRE WAS GONE. I WENT TO REPLACE IT AND WHEN THEY LIFT UP THE CAR ANOTHER TIRE HAD A BIG BUBBLE(12" LONG). I DONT REMEMBER IF A THIRD OR FORTH HAD SAME PROBLEM BUT I END UP REPLACING ALL 4 (DEFINETLY NOT FIRESTONE). SINCE THAN I ALLWAYS CHECK THE TIRES I HAD ON MY CAR. I BELIEVE I WAS LUCKY. BUT THE EXPERIENCE EVEN TODAY GIVE ME THE GUSS BUMPS.( DOT NUMBER: TIRE SIZE: 15 )
