The 2017FORDF-150 carries 1566 consumer safety complaints in NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation database for this specific model-year cohort. Within that volume, owners reported 46 crashes, 22 fires, 48 injuries, and 0 fatalities. No NCAP 5-star crash-test rating is available for this model year in the federal database.
Component-level analysis is where model-year complaints become actionable: the top complaint category for the 2017 F-150 is power train with 399 filings, followed by engine (288) and unknown or other (147). Concentration in one or two component groups is the classic signature of a systemic defect; a flat distribution usually reflects normal aging, warranty complaints, or isolated build-plant variability. This model year has 16 active recall campaigns, which means the manufacturer is obligated to remedy the covered defect at no charge for the life of the vehicle — the full NHTSA campaign numbers are listed below.
NHTSA currently has 9 investigation files overlapping the 2017 F-150, and 1 remain open. Owners comparing this cohort against neighboring years should pair the counters above with the complaint-by-year trend on the parent model page — a spike in a single year often tracks to a platform refresh, a new transmission supplier, or an updated ECU calibration. Use the related-complaint feed below to read raw owner narratives before deciding whether any pattern here affects your specific use case.

I was driving 70 mph down the interstate when my truck unexpectedly shifted into 1st. A couple weeks later, I was driving down the interstate when my truck unexpectedly shifted into neutral and then the reverse camera came on. I took it to a local mechanic shop yesterday when the truck unexpectedly shifted into neutral again. This is completely unacceptable and is very dangerous. It is currently being worked on to replace the lead frame but this is a huge safety issue and id like Ford to cover my repair cost. It has left me stranded three times now. I did the recall not too long ago and this DID NOT fix the issue. Ford clearly knows about the issue and decided to only update the software. Id also like to add my truck is only driven maybe once a month so its not heavily driven.

Itâs come to my attention this is a known issue for my 2017 Ford F150 EcoBoost 3.5L V6, 10 speed automatic transmission. I need help with repairs. Was told to report this on this site.

Downshift in transmission, now shudder when going 45-70. Started around 65,000 miles now I have around 87,000 miles on it.
Reporting an ongoing off intermittent malfunction of the 6speed transmission electrical/sensor components causing unexpected downshifting and upshifting without any driver input or warning. this occurs semi regularly and is very concerning for the safety of the driver, passengers, and those on the road. Iâve been made aware of this ongoing investigation regarding the transmission issue, and am filing a report as a result. No road accident has resulted yet from said issue, but there is growing concern for the safety conditions in said vehicle as it continues to be used.
The transmission downshifted while driving 60 to 65 MPH and needed repairs. Transmission Specialist changed out transmission electric control unit.
Wheels lock up and down shift at high rate of speed. Code on dash is a PO720.
Lead frame failure on 6R80 transmission. Caused loss of 3 gears, sudden downshifts, hard clunky shifting of the ones that do work, and loss of manual shifting function. After replacement, use of all gears returned but manual shifting still does not function.

While driving my truck roughly 60 mph, I experienced a sudden and uncommandded shift from 6th to 1st gear for roughly 3-5 seconds. When this occurred the engine RPMs jumped up to near Red Line and I experienced a rapid deceleration. I was driving on a dry road with new tires and did not experience any wheel lock up or skidding. However, this could have very easily posed an extreme safety hazard to both me and other drivers around me had I lost control of the vehicle which would have been highly likely in less optimal conditions. The problem has not been reproduced by a dealer or independent service center and the components have not been inspected. While the downshift was occurring there were some lights that flashed on the dashboard. I believe it may have been a check engine light, but my focus was on maintaining control of the vehicle so I did not have time to focus on the lights. Once the engine shifted back to normal there were no remaining lights or cautions. The symptoms o

I bought my 2017 Ford Shelby F150 (V8 5.0L, 6R80 transmission) used from a dealership in 2022, and noticed when depressing the Sport mode on the shifter, and hard acceleration, that the truck will suddenly downshift to a very dangerous gear while on the freeway. I heard the NTSA engineering analysis that is ongoing, and wanted to include my experience. Since I don't touch the Sport mode on the truck, it has not happened since. Ford needs to do a recall on this VERY dangerous issue.

The contact owns a 2017 Ford F-150. The contact stated that on several occasions while driving, the vehicle shuddered and vibrated abnormally. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where the transmission fluid was flushed, and the filter was replaced. The failure recurred approximately 8 months later. On another occasion, while driving 65 MPH, the transmission unexpectedly downshifted to first gear and flashed between drive(D) and manual(M), and the rear tires locked up. The vehicle was taken to the residence. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired, but the transmission fluid was checked by an independent mechanic, who observed a full reservoir. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 198,000.
