Component-level analysis is where model-year complaints become actionable: the top complaint category for the 2002 E-SERIES is suspension with 1 filings, followed by visibility:defroster/defogger/hvac system:windshield:electrical heating element (1) and engine and engine cooling:engine (1). Concentration in one or two component groups is the classic signature of a systemic defect; a flat distribution usually reflects normal aging, warranty complaints, or isolated build-plant variability. This model year has 1 active recall campaign, which means the manufacturer is obligated to remedy the covered defect at no charge for the life of the vehicle — the full NHTSA campaign numbers are listed below.

NHTSA currently has 177 investigation files overlapping the 2002 E-SERIES, and 8 remain open. Owners comparing this cohort against neighboring years should pair the counters above with the complaint-by-year trend on the parent model page — a spike in a single year often tracks to a platform refresh, a new transmission supplier, or an updated ECU calibration. WHILE I DOUBT THIS WILL ATTRACT ENOUGH ATTENTION FOR FORD TO ADDRESS THE PROBLEM, I TOO, MADE THE MISTAKE OF PURCHASING A 2002 EXPLORER XLT. THE REAR DIFFERENTIAL MAKES A HORRID WHINING NOISE BETWEEN 50-65 MPH. FROM WHAT LITTLE RESEARCH I'VE DONE SINCE THE PROBLEM WAS DIAGNOSED I'M FINDING THAT I'M NOT THE ONLY UNFORTUNATE FORD OWNER WITH THE SAME DEFECT. MOST OF WHAT I'M FINDING STATES THAT EVEN WHEN THE PROBLEM IS "FIXED" THAT IT RE-OCCURS. WHY IS FORD NOT ISSUING A RECALL? *NM
