The 1999DODGEWAGON carries 4 consumer safety complaints in NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation database for this specific model-year cohort. Within that volume, owners reported 0 crashes, 0 fires, 0 injuries, and 0 fatalities. No NCAP 5-star crash-test rating is available for this model year in the federal database.
Component-level analysis is where model-year complaints become actionable: the top complaint category for the 1999 WAGON is suspension:front:control arm:upper ball joint with 2 filings, followed by suspension:front:control arm:lower ball joint (1) and suspension:front:control arm (1). Concentration in one or two component groups is the classic signature of a systemic defect; a flat distribution usually reflects normal aging, warranty complaints, or isolated build-plant variability.
NHTSA currently has 20 investigation files overlapping the 1999 WAGON, and 1 remain open. Owners comparing this cohort against neighboring years should pair the counters above with the complaint-by-year trend on the parent model page — a spike in a single year often tracks to a platform refresh, a new transmission supplier, or an updated ECU calibration. I HAVE A 1999 DODGE DURANGO. I HAVE SEEN YOUR RECENT REQUEST FOR CHRYSLER TO RECALL THE DURANGO BECAUSE OF THE UPPER BALL JOINTS. THE RECALL REQUEST WAS 2000-2004 DURANGOS AND DAKOTAS. I HAVE HAD TO REPLACE THE BALL JOINTS AND FRONT AXALS IN MY TRUCK TWICE . THIS IS THE SAME BODY STYLE AS 2000 THR 2004 . WHY ARE THEY NOT REQUESTING RECALL ON THE 1999 DURANGOS TO? *JB
I HAVE HAD TIE ROD ENDS REPLACED ON MY 1999 DURANGO TWICE. ONCE AT 23883 MILES (7/31/01) AND AGAIN AT 45534 MILES AND BALL JOINTS REPLACED AT 45534(9/03/2004. BOTH TIMES THE HANDLING OF THE VEHICLE BECAME VERY UNSTABLE. I WROTE TO DODGE AND CALLED WITH THE ONLY RESPONSE THAT I NEEDED TO HAVE A QUALIFIED DODGE DEALER DO THE WORK, WHICH I HAD, BOTH TIMES. MY CONCERN IS WITH ALL THE FRONT END ISSUES I'VE HAD, WILL I HAVE TO REPLACE SOMETING AGAIN IN ANOTHER 20,000 MILES AND IS THE VEHICLE SAFE?*AK
