The 2005DODGERAM 1500 carries 1625 consumer safety complaints in NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation database for this specific model-year cohort. Within that volume, owners reported 162 crashes, 25 fires, 93 injuries, and 8 fatalities. No NCAP 5-star crash-test rating is available for this model year in the federal database.
Component-level analysis is where model-year complaints become actionable: the top complaint category for the 2005 RAM 1500 is power train with 546 filings, followed by air bags (356) and engine (76). Concentration in one or two component groups is the classic signature of a systemic defect; a flat distribution usually reflects normal aging, warranty complaints, or isolated build-plant variability. This model year has 7 active recall campaigns, which means the manufacturer is obligated to remedy the covered defect at no charge for the life of the vehicle — the full NHTSA campaign numbers are listed below.
NHTSA currently has 1 investigation file overlapping the 2005 RAM 1500. Owners comparing this cohort against neighboring years should pair the counters above with the complaint-by-year trend on the parent model page — a spike in a single year often tracks to a platform refresh, a new transmission supplier, or an updated ECU calibration. Use the related-complaint feed below to read raw owner narratives before deciding whether any pattern here affects your specific use case.

I took my vehicle in for the recall on Sept 22,2025 and on Friday my rear end went out on my way home from work. On my recall receipt it's states they replaced the pinion nut, but after dropping my driveshaft I noticed the pinion nut was never replaced. I have spoke to the service manager 1 time and now he won't return my phone calls .
Pulled in driveway and without warning the rear gas tank strap broke due to corrosion, which left my gas tank hanging about 2 inches off the ground. Thankfully this did not happen when I was on the highway. The tank drop could have made contact with the road surface which could abrade the tank, create a hole from which gasoline can spill and cause a fire hazard, accidents with other vehicles, bodily injury and possibly death. We replaced the straps but felt it was important to make this report due to us finding recalls on gas straps for other Dodge Ram trucks. I feel there should be a mandatory check and replace notice on these gas straps.
[XXX] was on my way home noticed rear differential making a noise slowed down to 20-30 mph to prepare to pull of the hwy rear differential locked up pinion nut came loose and driveshaft fell out had it towed home called had an appointment set up at Steve jones in Dickson Tennessee to have the recall fixed. 1 1/2 month later dealership calls and advise me to call customer care because they couldnât get the parts to fix the vehicle I called customer care they told me I would have to supply the 2 parts to fix the vehicle because they were discontinued I confirmed with the dealership they confirmed said if I supplied the parts they would fix the vehicle I ordered the parts took to dealership then was told the manager over corporate said to not fix the vehicle now dealership says corporate is going to to do a buy out and crush the vehicle I explained to them that is not acceptable it has been almost 5 months with no resolution and vehicle still setting at the dealership is there
Rear differential locked up while driving at approximately 30 mph, causing the vehicle to come to a stop and unable to move. Luckily the failure happened on a road with little traffic so no accident occurred and other drivers were not put at risk. There were no warning lamps, messages, or other symptoms prior to failure. Inspection revealed broken gears and pins in the rear differential. There was a recall (P77) for this model year truck for what appears to be the same problem. The recall repair work was performed in 2019 and the truck has been driven approximately 20,000 miles since the repair. The FCA recall line told me to have the truck towed to a dealer to get a diagnosis and repair estimate, but after the tow was complete the recall line said since more than 2 years had passed since the recall repair work, the repair warranty had expired and nothing would be covered, regardless of diagnosis. The broken parts are still available for review if needed.
Vehicle brought in for recall repairs on March 18, 2024. Recalls R25 and N43 were completed. Recall P77 failed inspection. Dealer parts not available. Was asked by service advisor if ok to use aftermarket parts. I agreed. Service advisor needed approval from district rep before continuing. I was then told by service advisor that vehicle was safe to drive as long as I drove it easy. His comment, âIts lasted this long, you will be ok. Just dont pull any trailers.â Was asked to wait a week for district rep to return from vacation. I took the truck home and did not drive it after reading the P77 recall info. The truck is not safe to drive with a loose rear axle pinion nut. I returned the truck on 4/8/2024 for repairs to be completed. The dealer will not communicate with me unless I initiate communication. There is no information on parts being ordered or work being scheduled. It is now 4/29/2024 and no action from the dealer. I have asked to speak with the Service Manager and no reply

I visited my local Dodge dealership for airbag recalls for my 2005 Dodge Ram in December 2022. In October 2023 I noticed a leak in the rear differential. When looking into the recalls for my Vin the differential pin was mentioned on there but never to me as I thought it was just the airbags. The part has been fixed by a mechanic shop (I paid for) but, did dodge complete the inspection or just checked complete to include airbags recall (complete)?

Pinion separated from front drivers' side of truck while driving, almost causing accident.
Significantly rusted out truck bed framing. I purchased the truck from a private seller a couple of years ago, and the bed had a rubber mat and plastic side panels in the bed. I was unaware of what was underneath at that time. On 06/28/2023, I removed the rubber mat, and side plastic panels to reveal major rusting with the truck bed. The bed is at major risk of separating from the frame. If this issue is not resolved, the truck bed will experience separation from the truck frame; causing the bed to separate at highway speeds, causing property damage, injuries, or even death. Upon searching for a good used bed from salvage yards, none exist that are in good condition in a 500 mile search radius and/or they are $800.00 to multiple thousands in cost to obtain. Multiple beds on the search have major rusting/wasting of the bed frame as well. This should constitute a major safety defect with poor rust proofing.
The contact owns a 2005 Dodge Ram 1500. The contact stated that while driving approximately 5 MPH, there was a banging noise followed by a dragging noise coming from underneath the vehicle. The vehicle was immediately stopped and upon inspection it was discovered that the fuel tank straps had failed and the fuel tank had fallen to the ground and was being dragged while the vehicle was being driven. The contact stated that the fuel tank straps were severely rusted. The contact stated that the fuel tank was filled with gasoline during the failure. The vehicle was towed to the local mechanic. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer and local dealer were not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 158,000.
