THE BRAUN CORPORATION HAS NOTIFIED NHTSA ABOUT A DEFECT IN CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2005-2008 GENERAL MOTORS MOBILITY CONVERSION, HANDICAPPED ACCESSIBLE LOW FLOOR MINIVANS. DURING CONVERSION, THE DRIVER OR PASSENGER SIDE TRAILING ARM MODIFICATION MAY NOT HAVE BEEN ADEQUATELY WELDED.

THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING AT VARIOUS SPEEDS, THE CHARGING SYSTEM FAILURE WARNING MESSAGE WOULD FLASH ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL AS THE VEHICLE WOULD SIMULTANEOUSLY REDUCE ITS POWER. SOON AFTER THE WARNING LIGHT DISSIPATED, THE VEHICLE WOULD RESUME NORMAL DRIVING OPERATION. TRIED TO RESTART THE VAN AND IT STARTED UP FINE THEN SMOKE STARTED TO FILL THE INTERIOR COMPARTMENT AND THEN FLAMES EMERGE FROM THE DASH SO WE GOT A SAFE DISTANCE FROM THE VAN AND CALLED THE FIRE DEPARTMENT.
