The 2000CHEVROLETSIERRA carries 11 consumer safety complaints in NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation database for this specific model-year cohort. Within that volume, owners reported 1 crash, 0 fires, 0 injuries, and 0 fatalities. No NCAP 5-star crash-test rating is available for this model year in the federal database.

Component-level analysis is where model-year complaints become actionable: the top complaint category for the 2000 SIERRA is service brakes, hydraulic:antilock/traction control/electronic limited slip with 2 filings, followed by power train:automatic transmission (1) and steering:linkages:tie rod assembly (1). Concentration in one or two component groups is the classic signature of a systemic defect; a flat distribution usually reflects normal aging, warranty complaints, or isolated build-plant variability.

NHTSA currently has 57 investigation files overlapping the 2000 SIERRA, and 2 remain open. Owners comparing this cohort against neighboring years should pair the counters above with the complaint-by-year trend on the parent model page — a spike in a single year often tracks to a platform refresh, a new transmission supplier, or an updated ECU calibration. Use the related-complaint feed below to read raw owner narratives before deciding whether any pattern here affects your specific use case.

20130119SERVICE BRAKES

I HAVE OWNED THIS TRUCK SINCE MAY, 2001 (USE WITH APPROX 10K MILES). I TOOK IT TO HAVE IT SERVICED BECAUSE THE VEHICLE WAS LOSING BRAKE FLUID AND I COULD NOT FIND A LEAK AT ANY OF THE WHEELS OR THE FLEXIBLE LINES TO THE CALIPERS. THE SHOP I TOOK IT TO CALLED ME TO TELL ME THAT ONE OF THE BRAKE LINES HAD CRACKED WHERE IT HAD RUSTED JUST BELOW THE MASTER CYLINDER NEXT TO THE FIREWALL AND THAT HE HAD REPAIRED THAT SECTION OF THE BRAKE LINE. HE FURTHER INDICATED THAT I WOULD LIKELY HAVE FUTURE PROBLEMS WITH THE SAME ISSUE BECAUSE THE BRAKE LINES ALL APPEARED TO BE VERY RUSTY. I JUST RECENTLY HAD AN ISSUE WHERE THE CALIPERS ON THE FRONT AND REAR OF THE TRUCK LOCKED UP DUE TO EXCESSIVE RUST. THE VEHICLE HAS NEVER BEEN DRIVEN IN SALT WATER OR ON THE BEACH, NOR OUTSIDE OF NC WHERE THE ROADS ARE HEAVILY SALTED OR THE BRINE SOLUTION USED. THE BRAKE LINES ARE VERY CORRODED AND I KEEP THE VEHICLE INSPECTED AT LEAST TWICE A YEAR FOR FURTHER LEAKS OR RUPTURES. *TR
