Concentration in one or two component groups is the classic signature of a systemic defect; a flat distribution usually reflects normal aging, warranty complaints, or isolated build-plant variability.

NHTSA currently has 57 investigation files overlapping the 1997 S/T SERIES, and 2 remain open. Owners comparing this cohort against neighboring years should pair the counters above with the complaint-by-year trend on the parent model page — a spike in a single year often tracks to a platform refresh, a new transmission supplier, or an updated ECU calibration. Use the related-complaint feed below to read raw owner narratives before deciding whether any pattern here affects your specific use case.

THE PROBLEM OCCURS MORE OFTEN AFTER IT RAINS OR IF THE TRUCK SITS OVERNIGHT ON HUMID NIGHTS. WHILE DRIVING, THE TRUCK WILL START TO BUCK AND KICK AND IF I AM LUCKY ENOUGH THE SERVICE ENGINE SOON LIGHT WILL COME ON. CHECKING THE ERROR REVEALS THE SAME ERROR EVERY TIME - P0300 RANDOM/MULTIPLE ENGINE MISFIRE. NO KIDDING! THE FOLLOWING HAVE BEEN CHANGED, SOME MORE THAN TWICE: SPARK PLUGS, SPARK PLUG WIRES, DISTRIBUTOR CAP, ROTOR, MAGNETIC PICKUP COIL, IGNITION COIL, FUEL FILTER, FUEL PUMP AND EGR VALVE GASKET. BEFORE THE ACTUAL CAUSE OF THIS ERROR CODE IS EVER FOUND AND CORRECTED THE TRUCK WILL MORE LIKELY FAIL DURING A LIFE THREATENING SITUATION. THIS ERROR CODE AND THE BUCKING OF THE TRUCK HAS OCCURRED SINCE AROUND THIRD YEAR OF OWNERSHIP (1999). *JB

DT: THE VEHICLE IS A 1997 CHEVROLET PICK-UP TRUCK. THE FUEL GAUGE WAS BROKEN. WHEN THE CONSUMER TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP THEY REPLACED THE FUEL RESERVE GAUGE AND THE SENSOR. LATER ON THERE WAS AN ODOR COMING FROM THE VEHICLE. HE TOOK IT TO GOODYEAR AND THEY TOLD THE CONSUMER THAT ONE OF THE FOUR FUEL INJECTIONS WAS LEAKING. BECAUSE OF THIS ALL FOUR HAD TO BE REPLACED, WHICH WAS DONE. THE OIL WAS ALSO CHANGED. ON 7-15-05, THE ODOR WAS COMING FROM THE VEHICLE AGAIN. WHEN HE CONTACTED GOODYEAR THEY TOLD HIM TO BRING IT IN. AFTER EXAMINING THE VEHICLE THEY TOLD THE CONSUMER THAT THEY COULD NOT DETECT THE PROBLEM. THEY ALSO TOLD HIM TO BRING IT BACK IF THE ODOR CAME BACK. THE NEXT MORNING IT CAME BACK. WHEN THE CONSUMER CONTACTED THE MANUFACTURER THEY SAID IT WAS OUT OF WARRANTY, SO THEY WERE NOT GOING TO REPLACE THE FUEL TANK. *JB *TT
