Within that volume, owners reported 2 crashes, 0 fires, 1 injury, and 0 fatalities. No NCAP 5-star crash-test rating is available for this model year in the federal database.

Component-level analysis is where model-year complaints become actionable: the top complaint category for the 2002 S PICKUP is structure:body:tailgate:hinge and attachments with 7 filings, followed by suspension:rear:springs:leaf spring assembly (1) and service brakes, hydraulic:antilock/traction control/electronic limited slip (1). Concentration in one or two component groups is the classic signature of a systemic defect; a flat distribution usually reflects normal aging, warranty complaints, or isolated build-plant variability.

NHTSA currently has 57 investigation files overlapping the 2002 S PICKUP, and 2 remain open. Owners comparing this cohort against neighboring years should pair the counters above with the complaint-by-year trend on the parent model page — a spike in a single year often tracks to a platform refresh, a new transmission supplier, or an updated ECU calibration. Use the related-complaint feed below to read raw owner narratives before deciding whether any pattern here affects your specific use case.

WHEN I OPENED THE TAIL GATE TO MY 2002 S-10 BOTH CABLES SNAPED-IN-TWO AT THE SAME TIME. THIS CABLE FAILURE HAS DAMAGED THE TAIL GATE WHEN IT HIT THE BUMPER. WHEN I WENT TO THE PART STORE TO GET A REPLACEMENT CABLE FOR BOTH SIDES I WAS TOLD THAT THE CABLE DID NOT MATCH WHAT WAS LISTED IN HIS BOOK AS A REPLACEMENT AND WOULD NEED TO SEE A DEALER ABOUT THE REPAIR..... ODD THING BUT I ALSO HAVE A 1991 FORD F-150 WITH 215,000 MILES ON IT AND I STILL HAVE THE SAME TAIL GATE CABLES FROM WHEN IT WAS NEW.

A RECALL FOR THIS SAME ISSUE HAS BEEN ISSUED FOR THE GM SILVERADO PICKUP. THE SAME RECALL SHOULD APPLY TO THE S-10, AS IT IS THE SAME DEFECT AS IN THE SILVERADO. *JB
