Within that volume, owners reported 0 crashes, 1 fire, 0 injuries, and 0 fatalities. No NCAP 5-star crash-test rating is available for this model year in the federal database.
Component-level analysis is where model-year complaints become actionable: the top complaint category for the 1999 METRO is engine with 2 filings, followed by fuel system, gasoline (1) and fuel system, gasoline:delivery:hoses, lines/piping, and fittings (1). Concentration in one or two component groups is the classic signature of a systemic defect; a flat distribution usually reflects normal aging, warranty complaints, or isolated build-plant variability.
NHTSA currently has 57 investigation files overlapping the 1999 METRO, and 2 remain open. Owners comparing this cohort against neighboring years should pair the counters above with the complaint-by-year trend on the parent model page — a spike in a single year often tracks to a platform refresh, a new transmission supplier, or an updated ECU calibration. AS I WAS DRIVING ON HIGHWAY I-15 SOUTHBOUND, IN SAN DIEGO, CA, ON SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 8, 2015 AT 4.40 PM, I HEARD A PUTTERING / CLINKING SOUND FROM THE ENGINE. I SENSED SOMETHING WAS WRONG. I COULD NOT INCREASE THE SPEED. I DECREASED THE SPEED, CAME ON THE LAST (4TH LANE), TOWARD THE SHOULDER, PUT MY HAZARD LIGHTS ON. I COULD SEE SOME SMOKE COMING POUT FROM BENEATH THE HOOD OF THE CAR. SO, I IMMEDIATELY GOT OUT OF THE CAR, OPENED THE HOOD. SAW THE SMOKE COMING OUT FROM THE ENGINE AREA. OF COURSE MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT (SERVICE ENGINE SOON) CAME ON THE DISPLAY TOO. I FINALLY GOT IT TOWED TO THE MECHANIC. HE INFORMED ME THAT THE ENGINE IS DEAD. NOW I AM FINDING OUT THAT THE ENGINE IN 1999 CHEVY METRO'S DID HAVE A PROBLEM. *TR
