TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 CHEVROLET LUMINA (NA). THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 35 MPH AND ATTEMPTING A TURN WHEN THE STEERING FAILED. THE STEERING WHEEL WAS DIFFICULT TO TURN IN ANY DIRECTION AND REQUIRED FORCE APPLIED BY BOTH THE CONTACT AND THE FRONT SEAT OCCUPANT IN ORDER TO CONTINUE DRIVING. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO STATED THE STEERING RACK AND PINION WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. THERE WAS A RECALL ASSOCIATED WITH NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 03V527000 (STEERING: RACK AND PINION). THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE PROBLEM. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 250,000. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE.
