The 1984CHEVROLETCITATION carries 10 consumer safety complaints in NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation database for this specific model-year cohort. Within that volume, owners reported 3 crashes, 0 fires, 2 injuries, and 6 fatalities. No NCAP 5-star crash-test rating is available for this model year in the federal database.
Component-level analysis is where model-year complaints become actionable: the top complaint category for the 1984 CITATION is electrical system:ignition:module with 2 filings, followed by parking brake (1) and fuel system, gasoline:carburetor system (1). Concentration in one or two component groups is the classic signature of a systemic defect; a flat distribution usually reflects normal aging, warranty complaints, or isolated build-plant variability.
NHTSA currently has 57 investigation files overlapping the 1984 CITATION, and 2 remain open. Owners comparing this cohort against neighboring years should pair the counters above with the complaint-by-year trend on the parent model page — a spike in a single year often tracks to a platform refresh, a new transmission supplier, or an updated ECU calibration. I HAVE PUT SEVERAL THOUSAND DOLLARS IN THIS CAR TO MAKE IT SAFE AND KEEP IT RUNNING, HOWEVER MY MECHANIC IS WAS CONFUSED WHY THE CAR STILL WOULD NOT RUN. I FOUND OUT THAT THE DEFECT IN IN THE CARB. AND THAT THE DECELERATION VALVE IS STUCK CLOSED. THE COST WILL BE TO REBUILD IS $425.00. I SHOULD HAVE BOUGHT ANOTHER CAR WITH WHAT I HAVE INVESTED HOWEVER BY THE TIME THIS DEFECT WAS DISCOVERED I WAS ALREADY IN SO IN DEBT TO THE CAR I CAN'T TURN BACK AND DON'T HAVE ANOTHER $425.00 TO PUT OUT.
