The 1985CHEVROLETASTRO carries 6 consumer safety complaints in NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation database for this specific model-year cohort. Within that volume, owners reported 0 crashes, 0 fires, 0 injuries, and 0 fatalities. No NCAP 5-star crash-test rating is available for this model year in the federal database.
Component-level analysis is where model-year complaints become actionable: the top complaint category for the 1985 ASTRO is steering: steering wheel/handle bar with 1 filings, followed by steering:column (1) and vehicle speed control (1). Concentration in one or two component groups is the classic signature of a systemic defect; a flat distribution usually reflects normal aging, warranty complaints, or isolated build-plant variability.
NHTSA currently has 57 investigation files overlapping the 1985 ASTRO, and 2 remain open. Owners comparing this cohort against neighboring years should pair the counters above with the complaint-by-year trend on the parent model page — a spike in a single year often tracks to a platform refresh, a new transmission supplier, or an updated ECU calibration. I HAD A RECALL DONE ON THIS AT THAT TIME THE DEALER JUST RELPLACED THE BUCKLE BUTTONS AND PUT SOME SPRING CLIP ON THE RETRACTOR, THE SPRING DID NOT HOLD AND THE RETRACTOR TOTALLY GAVE UP WORKING I HEARD IT SPRING ALL OVER IN THE PILLAR AND THE BUCKLE HAS TOTALLY DETRIORATED FROM THE UV LIGHT IF THE RECALL WOULD HAVE BEEN DONE RIGHT I WOULD NOT HAVE THESE PROBLEMS WITH THE SEAT BELTS.RAKES HAS NEVER WORKED PROPERLY AND THERE WAS A RECALL ON THIS BUT ONLY FOR MANUAL TRANSMISSIONS EVEN THOUGH THE SAME COMPONETS FAILED ON THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION CARS AS WELL SEEN IT ALL THE TIME WHEN I WORKED AT A GM DEALER.*AK
