Component-level analysis is where model-year complaints become actionable: the top complaint category for the 1993 QUATTRO is fuel system, gasoline:storage:tank assembly with 1 filings, followed by fuel system, gasoline:delivery (1) and air bags (1). Concentration in one or two component groups is the classic signature of a systemic defect; a flat distribution usually reflects normal aging, warranty complaints, or isolated build-plant variability.
NHTSA currently has 9 investigation files overlapping the 1993 QUATTRO. Owners comparing this cohort against neighboring years should pair the counters above with the complaint-by-year trend on the parent model page — a spike in a single year often tracks to a platform refresh, a new transmission supplier, or an updated ECU calibration. FAILURE IS OF A FACTORY ASSEMBLY OF FLEXIBLE AND RIGID FUEL LINE. A CRIMPED HOSE CONNECTION (THE HOSE IS OF STAINLESS STEEL BRAID SHEATHING OVER RUBBER, WITH A CRIMPED SLEEVE AT ONE END, AND A THREADED FITTING ON THE OTHER) HAS BEEN LEAKING FOR SOME TIME BUT WAS NOT TRACKED DOWN AS THE SOURCE OF FUEL VAPOR FUMES UNTIL THIS AM. I WILL NOT BE TAKING IT TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSIS AND EVENTUAL REPAIR - THE PROCEDURE IS MORE CUMBERSOME THAN PAYING THE $86 AND REPLACING IT MYSELF. COINCIDENTALLY, THE DEALER PARTS DEPT. TOLD ME HE HAD TO ORDER 2 OTHER FUEL LINES FOR CUSTOMERS THIS SAME WEEK - HE DIDN'T KNOW WHY. AS MANUFACTURED, THIS HAS THE APPEARANCE (AND COST) OF A "LIFETIME" PART. THE LEAK EVENTUALLY ENDS UP ON THE EXHAUST MANIFOLD. FOR REFERENCE, THE AUDI REPORT REFERENCE # IS 524906, FILED 7/20 @ 9:00 AM. PS: YOUR HOTLINE WOULDN'T LET ME GET BEYOND THE MESSAGE LOOP!*AK
WHEN DRIVING THE VEHICLE SMELLED A STRONG GAS ODOR. ONCE THE VEHICLE STOPPED, THE GAS WOULD LEAK OUT OF THE TOP OF THE GAS TANK. *AK
