Within that volume, owners reported 1 crash, 0 fires, 0 injuries, and 1 fatality. No NCAP 5-star crash-test rating is available for this model year in the federal database.
Component-level analysis is where model-year complaints become actionable: the top complaint category for the 1994 CABRIOLET is visibility:glass, side/rear with 1 filings, followed by electrical system:ignition:switch (1). Concentration in one or two component groups is the classic signature of a systemic defect; a flat distribution usually reflects normal aging, warranty complaints, or isolated build-plant variability.
NHTSA currently has 9 investigation files overlapping the 1994 CABRIOLET. Owners comparing this cohort against neighboring years should pair the counters above with the complaint-by-year trend on the parent model page — a spike in a single year often tracks to a platform refresh, a new transmission supplier, or an updated ECU calibration. THE ORIGINAL IGNITION SWITCH WAS REPLACED IN 1997 UNDER NHTSA RECALL 96V017000 BY A DEALER IN WISCONSIN, BEHM MOTORS, APPLETON, WI. THERE WAS NO APPARENT PROBLEM WITH THE ORIGINAL IGNITION SWITCH, PROBABLY BECAUSE OF THE LOW MILAGE ON THE VEHICLE. THE REPLACED SWITCH IS NOW MALFUNCTIONING EXACTLY AS DESCRIBED IN THE RECALL BULLETIN. ALSO, THE 1997 AUDI A4 WAS SUBJECT TO NHTSA RECALL #00V31700 FOR THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM. THE 1994 AUDI SHOULD BE SUBJECT TO ANOTHER RECALL. THE DEALER ESTMATED COST OF THIS REPAIR IS $186. A. *AK
