Investigation Summary
IN APRIL 2000, BRAKE PARTS INC. INITIATED A CUSTOMER NOTIFICATION CAMPAIGN TO ADDRESS CERTAIN BRAKE MASTER CYLINDERS THAT WERE IMPROPERLY MOLDED AND ASKED FOR THEM TO BE RETURNED. THE LETTER IDENTIFIED TWO POSSIBLE CONDITIONS THAT MIGHT OCCUR IF THE MASTER CYLINDER IS OUT OF SPECIFICATION: THE FLOAT CHAMBER MAY NOT FILL WITH BRAKE FLUID CAUSING THE BRAKE WARNING LIGHT TO ILLMINATE, AND THE FLOAT CHAMBER WILL NOT DRAIN BRAKE FLUID UPON DEMAND, CAUSING THE BRAKE WARNING LIGHT TO REMIN OFF WHEN IT SHOULD ILLUMINATE. BOTH SCENARIOS APPEAR TO HAVE SAFETY CONSEQUENCES. THE PURPOSE OF THIS SQ IS TO DETERMINE THE EXTENT OF THE PROBLEM EXPERIENCE, CONSEQUENES, AND IF A SAFETY RECALL IS WARRANTED.
