A Recall Query like RQ98014 evaluates whether a previously issued recall is actually fixing the problem. NHTSA opens an RQ when owners continue to report the original defect after the recall remedy is installed, or when completion rates fall short of the agency's expectations for that risk tier.
Investigators summarized the matter as follows: "ON OCTOBER 3, 1997, FORD CONDUCTED A SAFETY RECALL ON 575 1994 L-SERIES TRUCKS BUILT AT THE KENTUCKY TRUCK PLANT FROM AUGUST 21, 1993 THROUGH SEPTEMBER 1, 1993 FOR THE SAFETY DEFECT AS DESCRIBED ABOVE. ON DECEMBER 6, 199..." Investigations are the early-warning layer of the federal auto-safety system, sitting upstream of formal recalls and defect orders. Whether this one closes without action or escalates into an Engineering Analysis, the full history stays in the ODI archive so researchers, litigators, and buyers can pull the paper trail at any time. Related FORD files, listed below, give context on whether this is an isolated concern or part of a broader pattern across the brand.
Investigation Summary
ON OCTOBER 3, 1997, FORD CONDUCTED A SAFETY RECALL ON 575 1994 L-SERIES TRUCKS BUILT AT THE KENTUCKY TRUCK PLANT FROM AUGUST 21, 1993 THROUGH SEPTEMBER 1, 1993 FOR THE SAFETY DEFECT AS DESCRIBED ABOVE. ON DECEMBER 6, 1997, THE AIR TANK IN THE 1995 FORD LNT 8000 TRUCK RUPTURED ALONG THE WELD SEAM, SIMILAR TO THE FAILURE MODE DESCRIBED IN SAFETY RECALL 97V-150. AS A RESULT OF THE AIR TANK RUPTURE THE DRIVER WAS SERIOUSLY INJURED FROM THE EXPLOSION THAT SENT METAL SHRAPNEL THROUGH THE FLOOR AND INTO THE CAB, AS WELL AS PIERCING THE FUEL TANK. THE BRAKES ALSO LOCKED DUE TO THE SUDDEN LOSS OF AIR PRESSURE CAUSING THE TRUCK TO SKID TO A HALT ON THE INTERSTATE. THIS TRUCK IS OUTSIDE OF THE SCOPE OF THE RECALL97V-150. THE PURPOSE OF THIS RQ IS TO DETERMINE WHETHER THE RECALL 97V-150 SHOULD EXPAND ITS SCOPE TO INCLUDE THE TRUCKS WITH SIMILAR DEFECTIVE AIR TANK.
About This Investigation Type
A Recall Query (RQ) evaluates the effectiveness of a previously issued recall. NHTSA opens an RQ when consumer complaints suggest that a recall remedy may not be adequately addressing the safety issue, or when the recall completion rate appears insufficient.
