2014-2017 Land Rover Range Rover Sport (L494) front steering knuckle fractures
NHTSA Preliminary Evaluation PE25006 — open, opened 2025-06-27 and involving the LAND ROVER RANGE ROVER SPORT.
NHTSA investigation PE25006 is a Preliminary Evaluation opened on 2025-06-27 and currently open. The subject of record is LAND ROVER RANGE ROVER SPORT, which places this file inside the Office of Defects Investigation queue for LAND ROVER. Latest activity on this investigation was logged on 2025-06-27 — NHTSA updates that field whenever an Information Request goes out, a supplement is filed, or a status change is recorded in the public docket.
A Preliminary Evaluation like PE25006 is the entry point of the federal defect-investigation process. NHTSA engineers scan complaint databases, field reports, and manufacturer data to decide whether an Engineering Analysis is warranted, whether a voluntary recall is already sufficient, or whether the pattern does not rise to a defect finding.
Investigators summarized the matter as follows: "The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) has received twelve (12) Vehicle Owner Questionnaires (VOQ’s) on Model Year (MY) 2014 to MY 2017 Range Rover Sport (L494 chassis) vehicles manufactured by Jaguar Land Rover North A..." Investigations are the early-warning layer of the federal auto-safety system, sitting upstream of formal recalls and defect orders. Whether this one closes without action or escalates into an Engineering Analysis, the full history stays in the ODI archive so researchers, litigators, and buyers can pull the paper trail at any time. Related LAND ROVER files, listed below, give context on whether this is an isolated concern or part of a broader pattern across the brand.
Investigation Summary
The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) has received twelve (12) Vehicle Owner Questionnaires (VOQ’s) on Model Year (MY) 2014 to MY 2017 Range Rover Sport (L494 chassis) vehicles manufactured by Jaguar Land Rover North America, LLC. VOQ's report that one or both aluminum front steering knuckles have fractured at the top at the joint where the steering knuckle attaches via a pinch bolt and nut to the upper control arm ball joint. The front steering knuckles are the mounting point for the front wheel and tire, along with the entirety of the front service brake assembly. A loss of structural integrity of the front suspension knuckle may lead to detachment of the upper suspension arm, which under extreme avoidance maneuvers may compromise the vehicle’s controllability and increase the risk of a crash. ODI is opening this Preliminary Evaluation (PE) to determine the scope, severity, and origin of this condition. To review the ODI reports cited in the Opening Resume ODI Report Identification Number document, go to NHTSA.gov.
About This Investigation Type
A Preliminary Evaluation (PE) is the first phase of NHTSA's investigation process. It is opened when the agency identifies a potential safety defect pattern, usually triggered by consumer complaints, manufacturer reports, or field monitoring. During a PE, NHTSA gathers information to determine whether a formal engineering analysis is warranted.
