ON 6/5/2008 ARVINMERITOR FILED A DEFECT REPORT STATING CERTAIN WHEEL END STUDS, AND SUBSEQUENTLY PRODUCED HUBS/AXLES WITH THESE STUDS, MAY HAVE BEEN INCORRECTLY HEAT TREATED DURING PRODUCTION. IF A WHEEL STUD FRACTURES, THE REMAINING WHEEL STUDS CAN BECOME STRESSED LEADING TO THE FRACTURING OF ADDITIONAL WHEEL STUDS. SHOULD THE WHEEL OF A VEHICLE EXPERIENCE ANY WHEEL STUD FRACTURES, THE WHEEL COULD DETACH FROM THE VEHICLE AND CAUSE A CRASH. RMD MAILED 32 COMPANIES INFORMATION REQUEST LETTERS ON 11/4/08. ANOTHER IR LETTER WAS MAILED TO NON-RESPONDING COMPANIES ON 12/19/08. OF THOSE 32 COMPANIES, 9 WERE VEHICLE MANUFACTURERS THAT DECIDED TO FILE DEFECT REPORT WITH NHTSA. THE OTHER 23 COMPANIES WERE EITHER NOT VEHICLE MANUFACTURERS OR REPAIRED THE EQUIPMENT PRIOR TO RETAILING THEIR VEHICLES.
