Open-data reference.

NHTSA Complaint about STEERING:RACK AND PINION:PINION SHAFT filed September 14, 2011

NHTSA complaint #879627 (ODI reference 10425363) concerns a 2006 PONTIAC G6 and was filed on September 14, 2011. The owner reports the failure occurred on July 5, 2011. The vehicle had 94,000 miles on the odometer at the time of the incident. The report was geocoded to Virginia based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as steering:rack and pinion:pinion shaft, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.

The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: no, fire: no, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. No crash, fire, or fatality was associated with this report, which places it in the early-warning stream rather than the priority-review stream. Because a VIN was supplied, this complaint is tied to a specific vehicle and not just a model-year cohort.

Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same PONTIAC G6 cohort independently describe similar steering:rack and pinion:pinion shaft failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Related filings for the same vehicle and component appear below, and the detail page for the full 2006 PONTIAC G6 shows the complete component-level complaint distribution alongside any active investigations or recalls.

Complaint Description

BOUGHT CAR ON 07/02/11, RETURN CAR TO DEALER ON 07/05/11 DUE TO POPPING NOISE IN STEERING WHEN TURNING LEFT OR RIGHT AT ANY SPEED, EVEN WHEN SITTING STILL. DID NOT DO THIS WHEN I TEST DROVE IT. STARTED A DAY OR TWO AFTERWARDS. DEALER SAID IT NEEDED GREASE PUT INTO THE INTERMEDIATE STEERING SHAFT,(WITHOUT EVEN LOOKING AT IT) EVEN THOUGH THERE WAS GREASE COMING OUT IF IT. DEALER WOULD NOT COVER COST OF REPAIR. CALLED PONTIAC /GMC TO SEE IF THERE WAS A RECALL AND IF THEY COULD OFFER SOME HELP ON THIS AND WAS EVENTUALLY TOLD NO. TOOK TO ANOTHER DEALERSHIP TO HAVE CHECK AND WAS TOLD THE WHOLE INTERMEDIATE SHAFT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. AGAIN CALL PONTIAC/GMC AND RECEIVED AN ANSWER OF NO HELP COULD BE GIVEN ON THIS PROBLEM. QUOTE TO REPLACE SHAFT IS $319.00. I WAS TOLD BY BOTH DEALERS THERE WERE NO SAFETY ISSUES WITH THIS PROBLEM, THAT THIS WOULD NOT GO OUT ON ME WHILE DRIVING AND CAUSE A WRECK. I DON'T KNOW IF I BELIEVE THEM OR NOT. NO HONESTLY WHEN IT COMES TO BUYING A CAR. PONTIAC/
