Open-data reference.
NHTSA Complaint about POWER TRAIN:AXLE HUBS filed July 21, 2011
NHTSA complaint #868887 (ODI reference 10414016) concerns a 2004 CHEVROLET TAHOE and was filed on July 21, 2011. The owner reports the failure occurred on November 19, 2010. The vehicle had 90,000 miles on the odometer at the time of the incident. The report was geocoded to Louisiana based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as power train:axle hubs, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.
The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: no, fire: no, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. No crash, fire, or fatality was associated with this report, which places it in the early-warning stream rather than the priority-review stream. Because a VIN was supplied, this complaint is tied to a specific vehicle and not just a model-year cohort.
Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same CHEVROLET TAHOE cohort independently describe similar power train:axle hubs failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Complaint Description
ABS LIGHT CAME ON ALONG WITH A LOUD HUM AND RATTLING FROM FRONT TIRE AREA. HAD TO GET THE HUB ASSEMBLY REPLACE. THIS HAPPENED AROUND 90,000 MILES WITH THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE TIRE, AND AROUND 130,000 MILES WITH THE FRONT DRIVER SIDE TIRE. BOTH MECHANICS I BROUGHT IT TO SAID THIS WAS A COMMON PROBLEM FOR MY TYPE OF VEHICLE. THEY ALSO MENTIONED THAT WHEN THIS OCCURS THE ENTIRE WHEEL COULD FALL OFF AND RESULT IN A MAJOR ACCIDENT IF TRAVELING AT HIGH SPEEDS. *KB
