Open-data reference.
NHTSA Complaint about VISIBILITY:REAR WINDOW WIPER/WASHER filed June 15, 2011
NHTSA complaint #861988 (ODI reference 10407008) concerns a 2011 CHEVROLET TRAVERSE and was filed on June 15, 2011. The owner reports the failure occurred on June 13, 2011. The vehicle had 9,500 miles on the odometer at the time of the incident. The report was geocoded to South Dakota based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as visibility:rear window wiper/washer, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.
The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: no, fire: no, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. No crash, fire, or fatality was associated with this report, which places it in the early-warning stream rather than the priority-review stream. Because a VIN was supplied, this complaint is tied to a specific vehicle and not just a model-year cohort.
Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same CHEVROLET TRAVERSE cohort independently describe similar visibility:rear window wiper/washer failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Complaint Description
MY 2011 CHEVY TRAVERSE WAS PARKED IN THE GARAGE FOR OVER AN HOUR WHEN MY HUSBAND WALKED IN THE GARAGE AND HEARD A CRACKLING NOISE. HE BEGAN WALKING AROUND TRYING TO FIND THE NOISE AND SAW THE BACK WINDOW OF THE TRAVERSE SLOWING CRACKING. WHEN HE FIRST OBSERVED - THERE WAS NO HOLES - ONLY CRACKING. THE CRACKING CONTINUED FOR UNKNOWN LENGTH OF TIME. TWO HOLES IN THE CENTER FORMED AS GLASS FELL OUT. BY THE NEXT MORNING, ONE LARGE HOLE IN THE CENTER HAD FORMED. THE GLASS APPEARS TO BULGE OUT FROM THE INSIDE OF THE CAR. THE EDGES OF THE GLASS ALL AROUND THE PERIMETER OF THE WINDOW ARE GONE. TEMP OUTSIDE WAS AROUND 72 DEGREES. NOTHING UNUSUAL ABOUT WEATHER OR TEMP ON THIS DAY. *TR
