2010 FORD ESCAPE — Complaint #776950

Open-data reference.

NHTSA Complaint about SUSPENSION:FRONT filed March 25, 2010

NHTSA complaint #776950 (ODI reference 10322196) concerns a 2010 FORD ESCAPE and was filed on March 25, 2010. The owner reports the failure occurred on February 10, 2010. The vehicle had 88 miles on the odometer at the time of the incident. The report was geocoded to California based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as suspension:front, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.

The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: no, fire: no, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. No crash, fire, or fatality was associated with this report, which places it in the early-warning stream rather than the priority-review stream. Because a VIN was supplied, this complaint is tied to a specific vehicle and not just a model-year cohort.

Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same FORD ESCAPE cohort independently describe similar suspension:front failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Complaint Description

BRAND NEW 2010 FORD ESCAPE EXHIBITS HARSH, UNILATERAL "CLUNK" ON PASSENGER SIDE WHILE TRAVELING OVER BUMPS AND DIPS AS IF REBOUND ACTION OF SHOCK IS FAILING. THIS CLUNK OCCURS AT POSTED SPEED LIMITS AND MAY CAUSE A LOSS OF CONTROL AT HIGHER SPEEDS OR MORE SEVERE BUMPS OR POTHOLES. THE LOCAL FORD DEALER TEST DROVE WITH ME AND THEY WERE INITIALLY ALARMED, BUT AFTER DRIVING OTHER ESCAPES, THE SAME CLUNK OCCURS AND I WAS TOLD THIS IS A NORMAL OPERATING CHARACTERISTIC. THIS IS MY 2ND ESCAPE AND MY 2006 DOES NOT EXHIBIT THIS CLUNK, NOR DO ANY OTHER OF MY VEHICLES.
