NHTSA Complaint about SUSPENSION:FRONT:SPRINGS:AIR SUSPENSION SYSTEM filed September 19, 2008

NHTSA complaint #689073 (ODI reference 10242908) concerns a 2004 JAGUAR XJ8 and was filed on September 19, 2008. The owner reports the failure occurred on July 27, 2007. The vehicle had 50,000 miles on the odometer at the time of the incident. The report was geocoded to California based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as suspension:front:springs:air suspension system, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.

The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: no, fire: no, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. No crash, fire, or fatality was associated with this report, which places it in the early-warning stream rather than the priority-review stream. Because a VIN was supplied, this complaint is tied to a specific vehicle and not just a model-year cohort.

Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same JAGUAR XJ8 cohort independently describe similar suspension:front:springs:air suspension system failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Complaint Description

TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 JAGUAR XJ8. WHILE DRIVING 65 MPH, THE FRONT END OF THE VEHICLE LOWERED AND BEGAN BOUNCING UP AND DOWN. THE VEHICLE EXPERIENCED A LOSS OF SUSPENSION, WHICH CAUSED THE DRIVER TO LOSE CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. A FEW WARNING LIGHTS ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL, TWO OF WHICH STATED "VEHICLE TOO LOW" AND "ERROR SUSPENSION FAULT". THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A JAGUAR DEALER AND THEY STATED THAT THE FAILURE WAS DUE TO THE SUSPENSION RELAY. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED AND DROVE NORMALLY FOR APPROXIMATELY 500 MILES. THE FAILURE RECURRED AND THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED BACK TO THE DEALER. THEY REPLACED THE FRONT DRIVER'S SIDE STRUT, WHICH WAS LEAKING AIR. THIS IS WHAT CAUSED THE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE TO DROP DOWN. THERE HAD BEEN NO FURTHER OCCURRENCES; HOWEVER, THE CONTACT IS CONCERNED THAT THE PASSENGER SIDE WILL EXPERIENCE THE SAME SUSPENSION FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 50,000 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 52,000. UPDATED 10-29-08 *BF THE AIR SUSPENSION SYSTEM L
