Open-data reference.
NHTSA Complaint about SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:FOUNDATION COMPONENTS:DRUM:SHOES/LININGS filed June 11, 2008
NHTSA complaint #673453 (ODI reference 10230591) concerns a 2005 KIA SEDONA and was filed on June 11, 2008. The owner reports the failure occurred on June 6, 2008. The vehicle had 14,730 miles on the odometer at the time of the incident. The report was geocoded to Nebraska based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as service brakes, hydraulic:foundation components:drum:shoes/linings, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.
The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: no, fire: no, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. No crash, fire, or fatality was associated with this report, which places it in the early-warning stream rather than the priority-review stream. No VIN was supplied by the filer, so this complaint contributes to model-year trend data but cannot be tied to a specific vehicle.
Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same KIA SEDONA cohort independently describe similar service brakes, hydraulic:foundation components:drum:shoes/linings failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Related filings for the same vehicle and component appear below, and the detail page for the full 2005 KIA SEDONA shows the complete component-level complaint distribution alongside any active investigations or recalls.
Complaint Description
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 KIA SEDONA. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 35 MPH, THE BRAKES MADE A LOUD SQUEALING NOISE WITHOUT THE BRAKE PEDAL BEING DEPRESSED. WHEN THE CONTACT DEPRESSED THE BRAKE PEDAL, THE BRAKES WOULD NOT SLOW THE VEHICLE DOWN PROPERLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER AND THE MECHANIC STATED THAT THE FRONT BRAKES WERE PAST THE SAFETY STANDARDS AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE BRAKES WERE REPLACED, BUT LASTED ONLY 14,000 MILES. THE BRAKES WERE SUPPOSED TO LAST 30,000 TO 40,000 MILES. THE CONTACT RESEARCHED INFORMATION THAT STATED THE BRAKE SHOES APPEARED TO BE TOO LIGHT FOR THE WEIGHT OF THE VEHICLE. THE VIN WAS UNKNOWN. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 14,730 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 14,777.
