Open-data reference.
NHTSA Complaint about SUSPENSION:FRONT:CONTROL ARM:LOWER BALL JOINT filed March 1, 2008
NHTSA complaint #659731 (ODI reference 10219773) concerns a 2007 JEEP LIBERTY and was filed on March 1, 2008. The owner reports the failure occurred on February 17, 2008. The vehicle had 20,000 miles on the odometer at the time of the incident. The report was geocoded to Massachusetts based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as suspension:front:control arm:lower ball joint, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.
The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: yes, fire: no, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. A complaint that flags a crash, fire, or fatality is escalated on NHTSA's internal review queue and factors more heavily into any Preliminary Evaluation decision on this make and model. Because a VIN was supplied, this complaint is tied to a specific vehicle and not just a model-year cohort.
Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same JEEP LIBERTY cohort independently describe similar suspension:front:control arm:lower ball joint failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Complaint Description
I WAS DRIVING ALONG IN MY 2007 JEEP LIBERTY AT 34 M.P.H. WHEN ALL OF A SUDDEN THERE WAS A HORRIBLE NOISE AND THE RIGHT SIDE OF MY CAR FELL TO THE GROUND. I TRIED TO STEER SAFELY OFF THE ROAD AND FOUND THE CAR ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO STEER AND I WAS HEADING INTO ON-COMING TRAFFIC. I COULD HAVE BEEN INJURED OR KILLED AND I HAD TWO PASSENGERS IN MY CAR WHO WITNESSED THE SUDDEN FAILURE OF MY BRAND NEW 8 MONTH OLD CAR! IT APPEARS THAT MY LOWER RIGHT BALL JOINT FELL OUT AND BROKE MY CAR TO THE POINT MY TIRE CAME OFF MY RIM AS MY RIM BROKE WHEN THE CAR FELL TO THE GROUND. THERE IS SO MUCH FRONT END DAMAGE THAT MY CAR IS NOW TOTALED AND I AM OUT A NEW VEHICLE. THE LOCAL DEALER WILL NOT ACKNOWLEDGE THERE IS A PROBLEM AS THEY SAY THE 2007 WAS NOT PART OF THE MASSIVE RECALL ON OTHER LIBERTY'S WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. I'VE ASKED MY INSURANCE COMPANY FOR AN INVESTIGATION AND I'VE E-MAILED THE JEEP CORPORATION WITH THE SAME REQUEST, BEFORE SOMEONE ELSE GETS HURT OR WORSE! SOMEONE NEEDS TO STEP UP HERE AN
