NHTSA Complaint about SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:POWER ASSIST:HYDRAULIC filed February 8, 2008

NHTSA complaint #656843 (ODI reference 10217481) concerns a 2006 SAAB 9-3 and was filed on February 8, 2008. The owner reports the failure occurred on June 15, 2007. The vehicle had 18,000 miles on the odometer at the time of the incident. The report was geocoded to Illinois based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as service brakes, hydraulic:power assist:hydraulic, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.

The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: no, fire: no, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. No crash, fire, or fatality was associated with this report, which places it in the early-warning stream rather than the priority-review stream. Because a VIN was supplied, this complaint is tied to a specific vehicle and not just a model-year cohort.

Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same SAAB 9-3 cohort independently describe similar service brakes, hydraulic:power assist:hydraulic failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Related filings for the same vehicle and component appear below, and the detail page for the full 2006 SAAB 9-3 shows the complete component-level complaint distribution alongside any active investigations or recalls.

Complaint Description

INTERMITTENT LOSS OF BRAKE POWER ASSIST ON COLD START, GIVING VERY HARD PEDAL. RECOVERS WITH SEVERAL PUMPS OF BRAKE PEDAL, OR SEVERAL SECONDS OF IDLE TIME. BEGAN ABOUT MID-JUNE, 2007, AND WAS REPORTED TO DEALER. BEHAVIOR IS NOT CONSISTENT, AND MAY VARY WITH WEATHER CONDITIONS. BARELY AVOIDED A LOW-SPEED ACCIDENT IN A PARKING DECK FIRST TIME IT HAPPENED. CAR TAKEN TO DEALER SPECIFICALLY TO IDENTIFY / REPAIR PROBLEM ON 11-7-07. DEALER RESPONSE HAS BEEN POSITIVE, BUT UNABLE TO LOCATE SPECIFIC PROBLEM. DEALER FOUND THAT OTHER SAAB 9-3 AERO (V6) MODELS EXHIBITED SIMILAR CHARACTERISTIC, INCLUDING BRAND NEW 08. FURTHER PURSUIT WITH SAAB GOT NEGATIVE RESPONSE, AS DEALER WAS UNABLE TO FIND THE PROBLEM, AND REPORTED THE CAR "NORMAL" IN THAT IT BEHAVED AS OTHER SIMILAR MODELS ON COLD START. I THEN REPORTED TO A SAAB OWNER WEBSITE, AND RESPONSES FROM OTHERS LED TO COVERAGE OF CURRENT NHTSA INVESTIGATION PE08005. *TR
