2005 NISSAN ALTIMA — Complaint #655845
Open-data reference.
NHTSA Complaint about WHEELS:HUBCAP/COVER filed January 31, 2008
NHTSA complaint #655845 (ODI reference 10216609) concerns a 2005 NISSAN ALTIMA and was filed on January 31, 2008. The owner reports the failure occurred on May 22, 2006. The vehicle had 44,631 miles on the odometer at the time of the incident. The report was geocoded to California based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as wheels:hubcap/cover, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.
The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: no, fire: no, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. No crash, fire, or fatality was associated with this report, which places it in the early-warning stream rather than the priority-review stream. Because a VIN was supplied, this complaint is tied to a specific vehicle and not just a model-year cohort.
Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same NISSAN ALTIMA cohort independently describe similar wheels:hubcap/cover failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Related filings for the same vehicle and component appear below, and the detail page for the full 2005 NISSAN ALTIMA shows the complete component-level complaint distribution alongside any active investigations or recalls.
Complaint Description
CAR WOULD STALL AT LOW SPEEDS OR WHEN STOPPED. I TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP, THEY EXPLAINED TO ME THAT MY CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR WAS FAILING AND THAT THEY WOULD REPLACE IT FOR APPROXIMATELY $600. I THEN TOOK THE CAR TO A PRIVATE MECHANIC WHO REPLACED THE SENSOR FOR $222.91. CAR PURCHASED IN 2004. ADDITIONAL WORK REQUIRED: ENGINE REPLACEMENT, WHEEL BEARINGS REPLACEMENT, TRANSMISSION REPLACEMENT, AND INTERIOR PANELS REPLACEMENT. I FOUND INFORMATION OF THIS CAMPAIGN (07V527000) THROUGH WWW.NHTSA.GOV AND I'VE CONTACTED NISSAN. NISSAN CLAIMED THAT THERE WAS NO SUCH CAMPAIGN AND THEY COULD NOT HELP ME. THE CAMPAIGN THAT THEY SHOW FOR THE CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR IS FOR THE 2002-3 ALTIMA MODELS. *TR
