Open-data reference.

NHTSA Complaint about AIR BAGS:ON-OFF SWITCH ASSEMBLY filed January 21, 2008

NHTSA complaint #654469 (ODI reference 10215551) concerns a 2007 VOLKSWAGEN JETTA and was filed on January 21, 2008. The owner reports the failure occurred on September 5, 2007. The report was geocoded to New York based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as air bags:on-off switch assembly, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.

The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: no, fire: no, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. No crash, fire, or fatality was associated with this report, which places it in the early-warning stream rather than the priority-review stream. Because a VIN was supplied, this complaint is tied to a specific vehicle and not just a model-year cohort.

Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same VOLKSWAGEN JETTA cohort independently describe similar air bags:on-off switch assembly failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Complaint Description

AIR BAG LIGHT COMES ON AND STAYS ON IN THE VEHICLE UNTIL ENGINE IS STOPPED. THIS HAS BEEN GOING ON SINCE I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE BACK IN JULY OF 2007. THEY'VE RESET THE CODES, REPLACED THE SEATBELT BUCKLE AND RESET THE CONNECTORS THAT HAVE SOMETHING TO DO WITH THE AIRBAGS AND NOTHING HAS WORKED. I'VE TAKEN IT BACK TO THE ORIGINAL DEALER (WHERE I PURCHASED THE CAR) FOUR TIMES FOR THE SAME PROBLEM AND IT'S STILL NOT FIXED. I'VE CALLED VOLKSWAGEN OF AMERICA ABOUT THIS PROBLEM AND THEY'VE DONE NOTHING. THEY SUGGESTED I BRING IT BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP. *TR
