2007 CHEVROLET HHR — Complaint #653471

Open-data reference.

NHTSA Complaint about SUSPENSION:FRONT:MACPHERSON STRUT filed January 14, 2008

NHTSA complaint #653471 (ODI reference 10214758) concerns a 2007 CHEVROLET HHR and was filed on January 14, 2008. The owner reports the failure occurred on October 19, 2006. The vehicle had 249 miles on the odometer at the time of the incident. The report was geocoded to California based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as suspension:front:macpherson strut, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.

The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: no, fire: no, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. No crash, fire, or fatality was associated with this report, which places it in the early-warning stream rather than the priority-review stream. Because a VIN was supplied, this complaint is tied to a specific vehicle and not just a model-year cohort.

Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same CHEVROLET HHR cohort independently describe similar suspension:front:macpherson strut failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Complaint Description

PURCHASED 2007 HHR NEW IN OCTOBER 2006. WITH ONLY 249 MILES ON THE CAR, I RETURNED TO THE DEALER AND REPORTED A LOUD BANGING NOISE FROM THE DRIVERS SIDE FRONT END. THE COULD NOT VERIFY THE NOISE. SINCE THEN THEY REPLACED TWO SHIFT ASSEMBLIES, ONE STEERING COLUMN AND IN NOVEMBER 2007 THEY REPLACED THE DRIVERS SIDE FRONT STRUT. THE BANGING NOISE WAS STILL THERE. NOW THEY THINK IT MAY BE THE CHASSIS TWEAKING ,BUT STILL CANNOT FIND OR FIX THE THE RATTLING NOISE. ALSO THE TRANSMISSION MAKES A CLUNKING NOISE AND THE CAR SURGES WHEN STARTING IT WHILE STILL IN PARK. THE SAY THIS IS NORMAL. MY CAR HAS BEEN IN COURTESY CHEVROLET'S SHOP FOR MOORE THAN 30 DAYS SINCE I PURCHASED IT. I DO NOT DRIVE IT ANYMORE AS I BELIEVE IT IS UNSAFE, AND A LEMON. THE CAR NOW HAS LESS THAN 15,000 MILES. THE CAR WAS TAKEN TO THEIR SHOP ON 10/19/06, 1/08/07, 7/19/07, 10/27/07, 10/22/07 AND 11/13/07. *TR
