NHTSA Complaint about TIRES:MARKINGS filed November 28, 2007
NHTSA complaint #647790 (ODI reference 10210180) concerns a 2004 DODGE RAM 1500 and was filed on November 28, 2007. The owner reports the failure occurred on November 14, 2005. The vehicle had 22,010 miles on the odometer at the time of the incident. The report was geocoded to California based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as tires:markings, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.
The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: yes, fire: no, injuries: 1, fatalities: 0. A complaint that flags a crash, fire, or fatality is escalated on NHTSA's internal review queue and factors more heavily into any Preliminary Evaluation decision on this make and model. No VIN was supplied by the filer, so this complaint contributes to model-year trend data but cannot be tied to a specific vehicle.
Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same DODGE RAM 1500 cohort independently describe similar tires:markings failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Complaint Description
TWO YEARS AGO I TOTALED A DODGE RAM 1500 SRT-10. ONLY DAYS BEFORE THE WRECK THAT COULD HAVE TAKEN MY LIFE, I PURCHASED NEW TIRES FOR THAT VEHICLE. LADEN WITH COMPANY SUPPLIES, THE REAR END OF THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY SPUN OUT OF CONTROL AT 65 MPH. I FLIPPED 8 TIMES, LANDING ON THE ROOF 3 TIMES AND WAS LUCKY TO WALK AWAY. AS I MENTIONED, IT HAS BEEN TWO YEARS SINCE THIS ACCIDENT. WHY IS IT NOW I BECOME, BY MY OWN MERITS,AWARE OF THE NHTSA RECALL AFFECTING THAT EXACT ISSUE. THE FAILURE OF THE RESPONSIBLE COMPANY TO NOTIFY ME OF THIS DOCUMENT RECALL, HOWEVER SLIGHT, COULD HAVE COST ME MY LIFE. THE ENSUING FINANCIAL REPERCUSSIONS FROM THAT ACCIDENT WILL NEVER BE REMEDIED. I WAS FOUND AT FAULT FOR THE ACCIDENT AND IT MAKES ME FURIOUS AND SAD THAT NO ONE EVER MENTIONED THE POSSIBILITY OF MY INNOCENCE WITHIN THIS INFORMATION. *TR
