NHTSA Complaint about SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:POWER ASSIST:HYDRAULIC filed November 25, 2007

NHTSA complaint #647330 (ODI reference 10209857) concerns a 2008 SATURN SKY and was filed on November 25, 2007. The owner reports the failure occurred on October 24, 2007. The vehicle had 10 miles on the odometer at the time of the incident. The report was geocoded to Texas based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as service brakes, hydraulic:power assist:hydraulic, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.

The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: no, fire: no, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. No crash, fire, or fatality was associated with this report, which places it in the early-warning stream rather than the priority-review stream. No VIN was supplied by the filer, so this complaint contributes to model-year trend data but cannot be tied to a specific vehicle.

Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same SATURN SKY cohort independently describe similar service brakes, hydraulic:power assist:hydraulic failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Complaint Description

UPON STARTING THE VEHICLE FROM A DOWN PERIOD AS SHORT AS 6 HOURS, THE BRAKES ARE EXTREMELY INEFFECTIVE AND BARELY ABLE TO STOP MY VEHICLE WHEN BACKING FROM A PARKING SPACE. AFTER THE VEHICLE HAS RUN FOR A COUPLE MINUTES THE BRAKES APPEAR TO FUNCTION LIKE ANY OTHER CAR. MY PREVIOUS MECHANICAL EXPERIENCE AND THE RESEARCH I'VE BEEN ABLE TO DO ON THE WEB SUGGEST THAT THE VACUUM BOOSTER IS FAILING TO ASSIST THE BRAKE SYSTEM AT INITIAL STARTUP. I HAVE CONTACTED THE LOCAL SATURN DEALER AND SATURN CORPORATE VIA THEIR WEBSITE WITHOUT SATISFACTORY RESPONSE. THIS FAILURE OCCURS RELIABLY EVERY MORNING, I'VE HAD TWO NEAR MISSES ALMOST BACKING INTO TRAFFIC WHEN I COULD NOT STOP THE VEHICLE AT AN IDLE. *TR
